He Married Her for a Game, So I Disappeared Chapter 06

For the next two weeks, Vincenzo did not sleep.

He called my number 372 times. He sent me 219 text messages. None of them went through.

He sent his best men to every city in the world where the Luccarelli family had property. Paris. London. Tokyo. Miami.

They found nothing.

No one had seen me. No one had heard from me. It was as if Elena Luccarelli had vanished off the face of the earth.

Vincenzo worked eighteen hours a day, trying to hold everything together.

He ate at his desk. He slept on the couch in his office. He grew a beard. His eyes were bloodshot. He looked like a ghost.

His father, the old Don, watched him from the sidelines.

He had retired years ago, handing over control to Vincenzo.

He had said nothing when Vincenzo started bringing Seraphina around. He had said nothing when Vincenzo stood me up at City Hall.

But now, he knew it was time to speak.

One evening, he walked into Vincenzo’s office.

“You look like hell,” the old Don said, sitting down across from him.

Vincenzo didn’t look up. “I’m fine.”

“No, you’re not.” The old Don slid a manila folder across the desk. “You need to see this.”

Vincenzo opened the folder. Inside were bank statements. Receipts. Text messages.

All of them were from Seraphina.

Bank statements showing that she had been withdrawing thousands of dollars from Ferraro accounts every month, spending it on designer clothes and luxury vacations.

Receipts from hotels in the Hamptons, dated when she had told Vincenzo she was visiting her aunt in Boston.

Text messages to her friends, talking about how stupid Vincenzo was, how easy it was to manipulate him with his guilt over Luca.

“He thinks I’m some innocent little girl. He’ll give me anything I want. Even that stupid Luccarelli girl can’t compete with me.”

Vincenzo read the messages, his hands shaking with rage.

“I had my men follow her for a month,” the old Don said quietly. “Luca was a good man. He deserved better than a sister like that. You kept your promise, Vincenzo. You took care of her for three years. You owe her nothing.”

Vincenzo closed the folder.

He felt sick. For three years, he had been betraying the woman he loved for a liar and a gold digger.

“I know,” he said, his voice hoarse.

The old Don stood up. “Find Elena,” he said. “I know you love her.”

He left the office, leaving Vincenzo alone with his thoughts.

Vincenzo picked up his phone and called Antonio again. This time, Antonio answered on the first ring.

“Where is she, Antonio?” Vincenzo said, his voice broken. “Please. Just tell me where she is.”

There was a long silence on the other end of the line.

“I can’t tell you that, Don Vincenzo,” Antonio said finally. “Miss Elena made me promise not to tell anyone where she was. Especially not you.”

Vincenzo closed his eyes. “I know. I know I don’t deserve to see her. But I have to. I have to apologize. I have to tell her how sorry I am.”

Another silence.

“Is she in Sicily?”

Antonio hung up.

Vincenzo sat there for a long time, holding the phone.

Then he stood up. He grabbed his jacket and headed for the door.

“Where are you going, boss?” one of his capos asked.

“Sicily,” Vincenzo said. “I’m going to get my wife back.”
