Nine Years Of Auditions, Then I Walked Away Chapter 06

Sebastian was up before dawn.

He knotted his tie perfectly and combed his hair until it gleamed.

Then he checked his messages from Elara. His

frown deepened.

Still no reply.

He’d never groveled for anyone in his life. Annoyed, he shoved the phone in his pocket.

He let Seraphina put on the wedding dress Elara

had designed.

Feeling petty, he snapped a photo and sent it.

[If you don’t show up, someone else is taking the

title of Mrs. Whitmore.]

Seraphina noticed his distraction and ground her

teeth in jealousy.

She’d never imagined Sebastian would actually fall

for Elara Vance.

But it didn’t matter. Once they finished this ceremony and she was inside the Whitmore gates, she’d be the official daughter–in–law. End of story.

String lights glittered across the courtyard. Guests were already pulling up.

Seraphina brushed his hand lightly. “We should go greet everyone.”

Sebastian pocketed his phone and headed down. His eyes scanned the crowd obsessively as he walked.

His mother glided over with a champagne flute. Her smile was tight.

“Your father’s people are here. Every last one of them. People who matter.”

“This was your call. Don’t make us look like fools.”

Sebastian rubbed the wedding band on his

finger and tried to steady his breathing.

Elara must have seen the message. She loved him

too much to let him marry someone else.

She was probably stuck in traffic. That’s why she

was late.

Seraphina was preening under the attention of the

other wealthy wives.

“It was always going to be Seraphina, wasn’t it? Mrs. Whitmore. I suppose we’d better get used to that.”

“Three years gone and he’s still wrapped around

your finger. Honestly, it’s almost impressive.”

“Remember that whole phase? The girl from The Flats? God, we thought he’d lost his mind.”

Seraphina giggled behind her hand,

soaking up the flattery.

face.

She didn’t notice the storm brewing on Sebastian’s

Time crawled by. The officiant was signaling for Sebastian to take his place.

He kicked over a chair with a violent clatter. His

heart was slamming against his ribs.

Where was Elara?

The memory of her saying we’re done flashed through his mind.

They’d fought before. But she’d never used the breakup word. Never.

Guests turned to stare at the commotion.

Seraphina hurried over, lifting her gown, and

grabbed his arm coyly.

“Sebastian, it’s time.”

He shook her off like she was contaminated.

The person standing next to him was supposed to

be Elara.

“Take off the dress.”

The lively chatter died instantly. Seraphina’s eyes went wide with disbelief.

“Sebastian, what are you saying?”

People whispered and shot mocking glances at

Seraphina.

His mother’s face darkened as she hissed at him.

“Seraphina is your bride! What the hell is wrong

with you?”

The courtyard gates burst open with a crash.

Seraphina’s ex Colt Brennan stormed in, his face twisted in rage. He slapped Seraphina so hard her head snapped to the side.

“You thieving bitch. You steal my money and think you can marry into a dynasty?”

“You think I’m a fucking ghost?”

Colt grabbed Seraphina’s dress and tore it. He

ripped the diamond necklace from her throat.

The chain cut her skin. She tumbled to the ground

in a heap.

Sebastian’s pity kicked in. He stepped forward to shield her, but Colt laughed right in his face.

“Your own woman ran off, and you’re here playing

hero?”
