He Abandoned Our Wedding, I Destroyed His Life Chapter 18

Matteo didn’t show up again after that.

I assumed he had finally gone back to New York.

I slowly found my footing in Boston, winning several major cases in a row. My name began to circulate in the city’s legal circles.

Eventually, a colleague at the firm figured out my relationship with my parents.

At first, I worried they’d think I’d gotten my position through nepotism.

To my surprise, everyone just laughed.

“No wonder you’re so good.”

“You really are just like the partners.”

“It makes sense. Great lawyers raise great lawyers.”

Hearing that, I felt a weight lift from my shoulders.

I really had made it on my own merit.

In the years that followed, I started using my vacation time for myself.

In the summer, I went to the Hamptons to lie on the beach.

In the fall, I drove to Vermont to see the foliage.

In the winter, I stayed home with my parents, watching the snow fall outside our windows.

In the spring, I flew to California and hiked through the national parks.

Years passed. I once again became the top-performing attorney at the firm.

By then, my name was well-known in Boston. Clients started asking for me specifically.

Over those years, more than a few men tried to ask me out.

I turned them all down.

Aside from my family, I no longer trusted any man.

For a long time, I almost forgot Matteo even existed.

Until one day, a close friend invited me on a trip to New York.

Five years ago, I would have refused.

But now, I just raised an eyebrow.

“Perfect. I know New York like the back of my hand. I’ll give you the grand tour.”
