He Abandoned Our Wedding, I Destroyed His Life Chapter 17

“Then I started lying to myself, pretending I had feelings for her. The truth is, I was just running from my own guilt. That’s why I chose her, again and again.”

“After you left, I finally understood how wrong I was.”

“The person I love has always been you. Not her. I never wanted to marry anyone else.”

“If you’ll have me, I’ll plan fifty-two more weddings. For every time I failed you, I’ll make it right. As long as you forgive me, we can go sign the papers right now. If you want to stay in Boston, I’ll stay. If you want to go back to New York, I’ll go with you.”

“I will never leave you behind again.”

“Please. Just give me one more chance.”

By the time he finished, his eyes were red-rimmed.

But I felt nothing.

He was asking for another chance.

I had already given him three.

Three chances, and he had squandered every one.

He had shown me exactly who he was. Even if I went back to him today, there would just be another Chloe tomorrow, another reason for me to be left standing on the sidelines.

That wasn’t something a few words of regret could change.

The moment I decided to return to Boston, Matteo and I were over.

“Keep dreaming.”

I said the words calmly, then turned, pulled out my phone, and called a car.

Matteo didn’t try to stop me.

He stood there in a daze. A moment later, he started running after my car, chasing it for a long block before he finally couldn’t keep up.

It meant nothing.

Because of that fiasco, I made an announcement to the entire firm.

I was not dating.

Nor was I interested in any man’s advances.

For the person I was now, nothing was more important than my work.
