“Who is it, dear?”

I knew how much they disliked Matteo. I quickly pushed him back out into the hallway and turned to my mother.

“Just someone from downstairs. I’ll be right back.”

With that, I pulled Matteo down the stairs. Only when I was sure my mother couldn’t see or hear us did I let him go.

“How did you find me?”

He looked terrified.

“Don’t be angry. I searched everywhere on my own. Yesterday, I saw your mother going into this building, so I asked some old classmates and… and I found out which apartment was yours.”

“I stood outside for a long time before I got up the nerve to ring the bell.”

As he spoke, he pulled a small, repaired bracelet from his coat pocket.

“This is yours. I took it out of the trash and had it fixed.”

I looked at the bracelet and froze for a second.

It had been with me for four years, and now it was back.

But no matter how carefully it had been repaired, a web of fine cracks was still visible across its surface.

I didn’t take it.

“There’s no need. You should give it to Chloe.”

“You’ve already given her so many expensive things. I doubt she’d care about something this cheap.”

Matteo’s head dropped.

“I was wrong. I’m so sorry.”

“It was only after you left that I realized what a mess I’d made. Just give me one chance to make it up to you, please?”
