He crouched down to help her pick up her books, his voice gentle.

“It’s okay. Everyone has a rough first week.”

Chloe looked up at him, and the tears spilled over.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I thought… I thought you had to push it.”

Rowan handed her a tissue.

“Don’t worry about it.”

He shot a glare at the gawking students.

“Show’s over, people.”

But the crowd didn’t disperse. It went quiet.

“That thing is crazy expensive, right?”

“How could she ever afford to replace that?”

“She probably doesn’t even know the brand.”

I stood at the edge of the crowd, watching without moving.

Because I knew she had orchestrated the entire scene.
