I shoved the memory aside and offered a tight smile.

“What a coincidence.”

Rowan registered my coolness immediately.

“Tessa, what’s wrong?”

I arranged my books in my desk, one by one.

“Class is about to start. You should get to your seat.”

He opened his mouth to say something else, but the bell rang.

During lunch, a burst of laughter echoed down the hall.

“Oh my God, she just walked right into it.”

“Does she not know it’s an automatic door?”

“She actually tried to push it open.”

I got up and walked to the doorway, glancing down the corridor.

Chloe was crouched on the floor in front of the glass doors to the library, gathering her scattered belongings.

A red mark was already blooming on her forehead. Her backpack was wide open, its contents strewn across the polished floor.

A few old notebooks, a sputtering ballpoint pen, a pencil case with mended seams.

A crowd of students had gathered.

Some were laughing, some were filming with their phones, and others were whispering.

“She’s from some town in West Virginia, right?”

“Explains a lot.”

“She looks like she’s never seen a school like this before.”

Chloe kept her head bowed, her shoulders trembling as tears welled in her eyes.
