My hand froze.

She looked at me, her voice dropping to a near-whisper.

“Chloe just got here. She doesn’t know anyone, and she’s not very good with people. She comes from a small town. If you could just look after her at school, it would make things so much easier for her.”

“You’re a brilliant student. You’ll do well in any class,” she added. “Right?”

I looked down at the marshmallows slowly melting in the cup.

“No.”

The smile vanished from Mom’s face.

“Can’t you do this one thing for me? Chloe is painfully shy. If no one is there to guide her, school is going to be incredibly difficult for her.”

“So I’m supposed to step aside?”

My tone was flat.

“I’m in the AP track because I want to apply to the Ivy League.”

Mom grew agitated.

“Chloe’s situation is different. Her academic foundation isn’t as strong as yours. She needs someone with her while she adjusts—”

“That’s her problem.”

I cut her off.

“I’m not sacrificing my college applications to cushion her adjustment.”

I stood up.

“I’m tired. Please leave.”
