He Said Wait Again And I Waited For The Plane To Paris Chapter 09

He Said Wait Again And I Waited For The Plane To Paris Chapter 09

I flipped open the diary at random.

The date on the first page was the day I left for Paris.

[Evie left. She doesn’t want me anymore.]

[I searched the whole apartment and couldn’t find a single trace of her.]

[She left so cleanly, like she had never loved me at all]

The handwriting was messy, and there were dried tear stains on the pages.

I kept turning the pages expressionlessly.

[Today, I checked the surveillance footage and saw her leaving with that black suitcase. She didn’t look back once.]

[I thought she was just upset. I thought she would come back the next day.]

[I deserve to die.]

[Vivian came to see me, and I threw her out. The moment I saw the bracelet on her wrist, I felt sick.]

[I finally understand what I lost.]

The second half of the diary recorded every detail of how he had followed me in Paris.

[Today, I saw her smile at that Hayes guy.]

[She used to smile at me like that.]

[I bought her favorite red apples, but she said she likes sour fruit now.]

[Does she hate our past too?]

The last page was dated three days ago, the day he received my wedding invitation.

[Evie is getting married.]

[The groom isn’t me.]

[I cut up the suit I was going to wear to our wedding.]

[I deserve this. I deserve all of it.]

[Evie, congratulations on your wedding.]

I closed the diary and tossed it into the trash beside me.

His pain, his regret, his so-called deep love.

To me, all of it was nothing but worthless scraps of paper now.

On the day of the wedding, a château outside Paris was filled with white roses.

I wore the wedding gown Julian had custom-made for me and walked down the long aisle with my arm linked through his.

Sunlight poured through the stained-glass windows. Everything was so beautiful it felt like a dream.

During the ring exchange, I caught sight of the last row of seats from the corner of my eye.

In the corner sat a man wearing a baseball cap.

He was wearing a faded white shirt, his body thin and fragile-looking.

It was Adrian.

He stared straight at me, both hands pressed tightly over his mouth.

Tears streamed silently down his face.

When the officiant asked, “Ms. Evelyn Lane, do you take Mr. Julian Hayes to be your husband?”

I looked into Julian’s gentle eyes and said with complete certainty, “I do.”

Julian slid the diamond ring steadily onto my ring finger.

Then he lowered his head and kissed the back of my hand.

“Mrs. Whitmore belongs to the past now,” he said softly, only loud enough for me to hear.

“From now on, you’re Mrs. Hayes.”

I smiled, my heart clearer than it had ever been.

After the ceremony, I never saw Adrian again.

Like a ghost that could not survive in the light, he disappeared completely after witnessing my happiness.

Later, Sophie told me Adrian had gone back home.

He resigned from his position at the company and transferred all his shares out of his name.

Then he moved back into the apartment we had once shared.

Every day, he locked himself inside and talked to the empty room.

“Evie, I made your favorite honey-glazed ribs today.”

“Evie, the house on the south side is finished. When are we moving in?”

He forced himself to eat the seafood I was allergic to.

He ate until hives covered his body and he could barely breathe, and then he was rushed to the ER.

When the doctor asked him why he had done it, he cried and said, “I wanted to know how much she suffered back then.”

He punished himself in the slowest, cruelest way he could.

He spent the rest of his life trapped in endless regret and hallucinations.

But so what?

I stood on a street in Paris and watched Julian walk toward me.

He was holding a cup of hot coffee, his eyes soft and warm.

“What are you thinking about?” he asked, handing me the coffee as he gently smoothed the hair the wind had blown across my face.

“Nothing.” I accepted the coffee and took a sip.

It was sweet.

Sunlight fell across my ring finger, and the diamond caught the light in a brilliant flash.

The storms I had left behind had finally passed.

And I would never wait for him again.
