He Said Wait Again And I Waited For The Plane To Paris Chapter 05

At two in the morning, I arrived at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport.

I rolled my suitcase out of the arrivals hall, and a damp, chilly wind hit me head-on.

Claire was standing behind the arrivals barrier in a trench coat, waving at me like crazy.

“Evie! Over here!”

I walked over, and she pulled me into a tight hug.

“You’ve lost weight.” Claire pinched my cheek, her voice full of concern. “Come on. I’m taking you out for a proper late-night French meal to welcome you properly.”

Once I got into Claire’s car, I looked out at the unfamiliar streets of Paris.

A lightness I had never felt before quietly rose in my chest.

I switched to the French SIM card I had prepared in advance and logged into a backup messaging account that only had a few contacts.

The moment I came online, Sophie’s messages flooded in.

[Evie! Did you land?]

[Holy shit, Adrian has lost his mind!]

[He showed up at my place this morning and started pounding on my door like a lunatic!]

[He asked where I was hiding you. I said I didn’t know, and he almost tore my front door off.]

I looked at the screen, my fingers pausing slightly.

I could picture Adrian’s furious disbelief.

He must have thought I was playing hard to get, that I would obediently go back to him after a few days.

I replied, [I landed. Everything’s fine. Ignore him.]

Sophie responded within seconds.

[You have no idea how pathetic he looks right now.]

[He stayed at the hospital with Vivian all night and didn’t get home until this morning.]

[Apparently, the second he opened the door and saw that everything of yours was gone, he panicked.]

[He called your old number and found out it had been disconnected.]

[Then he went to your company looking for you. HR told him you had already finished your resignation paperwork yesterday.]

I read the messages without feeling much of anything. If anything, it felt almost absurd.

What seemed sudden to him had been my carefully planned departure.

Every piece of clothing I threw away and every mug I packed up was another bit of love I pulled out of myself.

By the time there was nothing left, leaving had become the most natural thing in the world.

[Evie, do you want to see how miserable he looks now? I secretly took a video.]

Sophie sent over a video file.

I hesitated for a moment, then tapped it open.

The footage was a little shaky. It looked like Sophie had filmed it from her doorway.

Adrian was still wearing yesterday’s shirt. His tie hung crooked around his neck, and his hair was a mess. His eyes were bloodshot and terrifyingly red-rimmed.

He gripped Sophie’s doorframe tightly, his voice hoarse beyond recognition.

“Sophie, tell me where she went.”

“She couldn’t have just left like this. She didn’t even say goodbye. She didn’t even break up with me.”

Sophie gave a cold laugh from behind the camera. “Adrian, how do you still have the nerve to ask? Yesterday was your fifth anniversary, and you left her alone to stay with Vivian. Did it ever occur to you that she might actually leave?”

Adrian staggered.

“I was just… I was just bringing Vivian food.”

He sounded like he was trying to explain himself, or maybe trying to convince himself.

“I told Evie I’d make it up to her today.”

“Make it up to her?” Sophie’s voice shot up. “With what? Another promise you’ll never keep?”

“Adrian, Evelyn doesn’t want you anymore. She’s disgusted by you.”

The video ended there.

I exited the chat and locked my phone.

“What happened?” Claire glanced at me while driving. “Trouble from back home?”

“Yeah.” I looked out at the Seine River beyond the window.

“But it’s over now.”
