At three in the afternoon, Adrian came home.

He opened the door and froze when he saw the three cardboard boxes stacked in the living room.

“What are you doing?”

He strode over, his brow furrowed.

“Putting away out-of-season clothes?”

I pressed down the last strip of packing tape.

“Clearing out old things.”

Adrian’s gaze landed on one box I had not taped shut yet.

Inside were the matching mugs we had used in college, along with the stuffed toy he had once given me.

His expression darkened.

“Evelyn Lane, are you done yet?”

He snatched one of the mugs from the box and slammed it onto the coffee table.

“You’ve been acting like this since last night because of one bracelet.”

“Now you’re even throwing these away? What’s next? Are you going to tell me you’re moving out?”

I straightened up and looked at him calmly.

“Yes.”

Adrian was so angry he laughed.

“Fine. So now you’re brave enough to pull this?”

He tugged his tie loose, sat down on the sofa, and stared at me coldly.

“Where are you planning to go? Sophie’s place? Or back to that hometown of yours where they don’t even have proper heating?”

“Evelyn, you’re twenty-seven. Can you stop acting like a little girl who runs away from home whenever she doesn’t get what she wants?”

“Do you really think I’ll come begging you to come back after you move out for a few days?”

He was certain I could not leave him.

Certain this was just a clumsy little stunt to force him to give in.

I didn’t explain. I only placed the mug back into the box and taped it shut in silence.

“Think whatever you want.”

Adrian watched me, irritation flashing through his eyes.

Then he stood up, walked over, and softened his tone.

“Enough. Stop making a scene.”

“Tomorrow is our fifth anniversary.”

“I booked your favorite Michelin restaurant. After dinner, we’ll go pick out a diamond ring.”

“As for the place on the south side, I’ll have my assistant put down the deposit tomorrow and put it in your name.”

“Is that good enough?”

He thought this was already more than generous.

I looked at his face, so familiar yet suddenly strange, and smiled.

“Okay.”

I nodded.

“See you tomorrow.”

Adrian let out a breath of relief and rubbed my hair.

“That’s my girl.”

He had no idea that my plane ticket was already inside my suitcase.

There were only fourteen hours left before my flight took off.

Adrian went to the office early the next morning.

Before he left, he kissed my forehead.

“I’ll pick you up at six tonight.”

“Wear that pink dress. You look pretty in it.”

The moment the door closed, I turned and walked into the closet.

That pink dress was hanging where it was impossible to miss.

It was the same style Vivian owned.

I didn’t touch it. Instead, I changed into a simple white shirt and a pair of faded blue jeans.

That was what I used to wear most often the year I met Adrian.

I pushed the three sealed boxes outside, called a local courier, and had them sent to a friend who ran a resale shop.

“Evie, these are all practically new. You really don’t want them?” my friend asked over the phone.

“No. Do whatever you want with them.”

After hanging up, I looked around.

I had once filled every corner of this thirteen-hundred-square-foot apartment with pieces of myself.

I had embroidered the throw pillows on the sofa by hand.

I had grown the succulents on the balcony, one pot at a time.

The ceramic mugs in the kitchen were souvenirs I had brought back from a work trip.

Now, everything was still in its original place.

Only the traces of me were gone, as if I had never lived here at all.

Just then, my phone buzzed.

It was a message from Adrian.

[Evie, I’m sorry. We may have to cancel dinner tonight.]

[Vivian got clipped by a food-delivery e-bike outside the office. She twisted her ankle, and it’s really swollen.]

[I need to take her to the hospital for an X-ray.]

[Can we look at rings in a few days?]
