Tessa raised her head and looked at Mom.

There was so much in that one look.

Apology, grief, a stranger’s hesitation.

And something undeniable.

Blood.

But still, neither of them spoke.

Tessa stood, turned, and walked out.

She paused in the doorway.

But she didn’t look back.

She just left.

Mom stood frozen, watching Tessa’s retreating figure as tears streamed down her face.

She called out, her voice barely a whisper.

“Tessa…”

So softly that only she could hear.

I floated high above the church, watching it all, and suddenly remembered something from when I was little.

Once, I asked Mom, “Do I have any brothers or sisters?”

She froze.

Two seconds later, she said, “No.”

But when she said it, her eyes were red.

I hadn’t understood then.
