They Regretted It After I Gave Up Chapter 15

On the back of the photo, I had written in marker:

“I’ll follow Beckett to the end of the world.”

Beneath it was a thick stack of notes.

Every page was covered in my handwriting.

“Tessa’s literary analysis is a little weak. These points on symbolism need to be explained in more detail.”

“Mock interview questions for Tessa. I hope she gets the Larkin.”

The date on the last page was the night I learned the truth.

The handwriting was a mess.

“So you didn’t want my notes. You just wanted me out of the way.”

Below that was thirty thousand dollars in cash.

It was everything I had saved.

At the very bottom was another note, this one for Mom and Dad.

“Mom, Dad, keep this money. Don’t go begging the Santoros for help with my ‘illness’ anymore. If I get to choose, I don’t want to be your daughter in the next life.”

Beckett clutched those notes and knelt in the woods, crying for a very, very long time.

Three days later was my funeral.

It was a small service, held at the Catholic church we used to attend.

The only people there were Mom and Dad, a few relatives, and some of my old classmates.

Beckett didn’t come.

He was forbidden from attending.
