She Stole My EpiPen. My Family Made Her Pay Chapter 05

When I opened my eyes again, I was lying in a VIP intensive-care suite at a private hospital in New York.
My grandfather sat by the bed, his wrinkled hand gripping mine.
My parents stood on the other side of the bed. My mother covered her mouth and cried silently. Relief after terror filled my father’s eyes.
“You’re awake?” my grandfather asked in the gentlest voice I had ever heard from him. “How do you feel, Selena?”
I opened my mouth, but my throat still burned raw, and no sound came out.
Just then, the door to the room opened.
Escorted by two bodyguards, Drake and Madison followed a nurse inside.
Drake had traded his violent temper for a mask of grief and regret. He hurried to the bedside.
“Mr. and Mrs. Kensington, thank God Selena is awake. What happened yesterday was a horrible accident. We didn’t know her allergy was that serious. If I had known, I would’ve suffered in her place.”
Madison nodded again and again, squeezing out two tears.
“Yes, exactly. We had too much to drink. The joke went too far.”
My parents studied them with ice-cold eyes.
Drake quickly pulled out his phone, opened Instagram, and found a photo of us from Central Park last year.
“Mrs. Kensington, I’m Selena’s boyfriend. We were going to look at engagement rings next month. How could I possibly hurt her?”
My mother’s eyes flickered. I had once told her I had met a thoughtful boy and wanted to marry him.
