After Seven Empty Chairs, I Took My Daughter and Left Chapter 37

Elias and Ava looked at the tiny figure at the same time. The tears in their eyes reflected an even softer light because of that innocent question.

Ava crouched down and reached out with the hand wearing the sapphire ring, gently stroking Lily’s soft cheek. Her voice was choked, but clear and firm.

“Yes, sweetheart. From now on, we will always, always be a family.”

Elias didn’t speak. He gave the most perfect answer with his actions. He bent down and easily lifted Lily, settling her securely in one arm. Then he reached out with his other arm and gathered Ava and Lily together into his embrace.

The three of them finally formed an unbreakable circle.

Ava pressed her cheek against Elias’s broad chest, with Lily’s warm little body tight against her other side. She could hear Elias’s steady, powerful heartbeat, smell the clean cedar scent on him, and feel Lily’s small hand clutching the edge of her dress. The sapphire ring on her finger was no longer cold, but warmed by their body heat, like a beating heart filled with promise.

The shadows of those past days, the empty chairs one after another in lonely nights, the composure she had forced herself to maintain before courts and social workers—all of it was completely dispelled in that moment. The pain hadn’t been forgotten, but it was covered and redeemed by the overflowing happiness of now. This embrace was so real, so solid, that it could withstand any storm the future brought.

At that moment, a low, distant boom pierced the museum’s quiet dome.

Then a huge golden firework burst open in the night sky, instantly lighting the entire glass courtyard as bright as day.

Holding Lily and taking Ava’s hand, Elias walked toward the enormous arched window. Outside was Boston’s Charles River, the dark water reflecting the brilliance spread across the sky.

“Wow!” Lily pressed her little face to the cold glass, her eyes shining brighter than the fireworks. “So pretty!”

It was the Fourth of July, the grand celebration of America’s Independence Day. Clusters of fireworks rose continuously into the sky, red, blue, and silver lights weaving together like Van Gogh’s starry night, passionate and free. They shattered at their highest point into thousands of sparks, falling like a waterfall and outlining Boston’s skyline in a dreamlike glow.

At some point, the string quartet had stopped. The entire world seemed to hold only the whistle of fireworks rising and the roar of their explosions. But the sound wasn’t noisy. Instead, it felt like a magnificent symphony, offering the grandest tribute to their newly born family.

Elias wrapped his arms around Ava’s waist from behind, his chin resting lightly on the top of her head. He didn’t look at the fireworks. His gaze remained fixed on the reflection of Ava and Lily in the glass.

“Ava,” he whispered by her ear, “I once thought my life would always be spent watching from the sidelines. Watching other people’s happiness. Watching your past. But now,” he tightened his arms, holding her and the child closer, “I have finally become the hero of the story.”

Ava turned and lifted her face to look at him. The dazzling light of the fireworks flickered over his carved features, and his eyes were hotter than any star in the night sky. She rose on tiptoe and kissed him first.

This kiss was unlike any before it. There was no testing, no passion. Only the peace and gratitude that came after everything had settled.

They held each other while Lily clapped and cheered at every firework blooming beyond the window. That small, joyful figure was the future they would protect together.

The firework display reached its climax. Countless golden sparks exploded at once, like a grand storm of gold, dyeing everything between heaven and earth with an eternal glow.

Sweet smiles on their faces, they held each other tightly amid the cheering of the crowd and the light of the magnificent fireworks.

Their family story came to a perfect close on this night filled with classic American romance, and at the same time, the next chapter of their lives began.
