What Isn’t Mine, I Don’t Want Chapter 05

He was loaded down with shopping bags, out with Sienna.

Our eyes met and he came over fast.

“Why’d you bring your suitcase out? Don’t tell me you’re going home by yourself?”

“Didn’t I tell you to wait?”

“I came to sell the bags and the jewelry.”

“What? Where would you even get money for designer

bags?”

I’d barely finished when Sienna went off.

She shot my brother a look, then came at me like she’d lost it and ripped the suitcase out of my hands.

The zipper tore open and everything inside spilled out.

Not just the bags and jewelry. My underwear scattered all over the floor.

People around us started staring. I clenched my fingers, mortified, and crouched to gather it up.

My brother’s face changed. He grabbed my wrist.

“Did I not give you enough? You have to go sell this stuff?”

“You’ve got no shame, but the Sinclairs do. Pack it get back home!”

“Let go of me!”

I threw his hand off and shoved everything, underwear and bags both, back into the case in a panic.

THUD.

The next second, Sienna kicked the suitcase and flipped

“Hillbilly. Putting bags this expensive in with your underwear.”

“What gives you the right to any of this? Tell me, did you cling to Adrian to get him to buy it for you?!”

More and more people gathered. I looked at the broken photo and my mind went blank.

“Sienna.”

My brother held back the still-raging Sienna, and for the

first time turned a hard face on her.

“Can you keep it together out here? With all these people watching, what are you screaming for?”

Sienna threw his hand off, furious, and said something to him.

I couldn’t hear it anymore.

The glass in the frame had cut across the photo of my mom and dad.

Hands shaking, I picked it up and slowly stood.

Sienna’s lips were still moving, still going back and forth with my brother.

“You monster!”

I came back to myself and screamed it, and my hand shot up toward her face.

“Nora!”

My brother cried out, threw himself in front of Sienna, and caught my wrist.

“What are you doing?”

“Let go!”

I screamed and fought with everything I had.

The slap never landed.

The knot of rage in my chest had nowhere to go. It choked me until I could barely breathe.

And right then, Sienna saw her opening and slapped me hard across the face.

SMACK.

My head snapped to the side.

Her chest heaved.

“You think you get to hit me?”

My brother, still gripping my wrist, froze for a beat, then let go like he’d touched a live wire.

After five full seconds of silence, I straightened my head.

I met his eyes, cold as ice, and his pupils shook.

“Nora, let’s talk this out. This isn’t the place for a scene…”

“There’s nothing left to talk about.”

I cut him off, looked once at the mess on the floor, turned, and walked off through the crowd.

What isn’t mine, I don’t want.

About half an hour later, my brother called, gentler than I’d ever heard him.

“Nora, where are you? I just dropped Sienna at home. Can we sit down and talk this out?”

“The train to Hartwell departs in five minutes. Passengers, please proceed to Gate 3.”

The station announcement carried into the phone.

His breath caught. He started to panic.

“You, you’re at the train station?”

I held my mom and dad’s photo.

Walking toward the gate, I said it plain.

“Mm. I’m going home.”

“Don’t worry. Not your home. My own.”

The line went dead.
