Ten minutes later, Damian’s assistant forced me into a very small banquet hall.

The stage decorations were old and shabby, obviously reused from the event before ours.

There were only five tables, with a few scattered mutual friends sitting among them.

The ceremony was about to begin, but not a single member of the Davenport family had shown up. Even Damian’s parents were absent.

The bride’s bouquet drooped limply over the edge of a table.

Beside it, the bridesmaid’s bouquet was so elaborate and beautiful that the contrast stung.

A photo slideshow was playing on the big screen.

Yet in almost every photo of Damian and me, Nina was there too.

There was Nina wearing tiny pigtails in kindergarten.

There was Nina sitting courtside at a basketball game, grinning foolishly.

There was Nina pouting in anger.

There was Nina sticking out her little tongue to lick an ice cream cone.

There was Nina gently stroking her pregnant belly with a tender smile.

Damian had edited the video himself last week.

At the time, I had been touched by how much care he seemed to be putting into our wedding.

I never imagined that after staying up for two nights, all his careful effort had gone into secretly framing Nina in the most noticeable spot.

People passing by began whispering, laughing at how cheap and shabby I looked.

The wedding officiant hurried over to urge me along, asking why the groom still had not arrived when it was already time for the ceremony to start.

I lowered my eyes to my phone. Three minutes earlier, Damian had texted me.

Damian: [Ivy, Nina just saw that Harry Winston released a new diamond necklace, and she suddenly wants one to go with her bridesmaid dress.]

Damian: [Push the ceremony back thirty minutes.]

I lifted a hand to my bare neck and no longer had the strength to reply.

Even a basic Harry Winston piece started at tens of thousands of dollars, let alone a new release everyone was talking about.

Last year, my dad was working construction when a section of scaffolding collapsed and split his head open.

When I got the call, my blood ran cold.

I finally got him to the ER, only to be stopped by a five-figure emergency deposit I could not afford.

I called everyone I knew through tears and barely managed to scrape together half of it.

In the end, the delay cost him his best chance at survival. My father died, and the only family I had left in this world was gone.

I sat in the cold morgue until dawn.

Damian had only lowered his head and held me in silence, without saying a single word.

Because of that ridiculous test, I lost the only family I had left.

Yet for one of Nina’s passing whims, he could throw away a fortune.

With a sharp rip, I tore through the hem of my brand-new wedding dress.

Under everyone’s stunned gaze, I turned and walked away.

But the moment I stepped out of the banquet hall, someone slapped me hard enough to knock me to the floor.
