The peanut gallery fell silent.

“Dorian, what is going on? The ceremony is about to start. Why are you still dawdling here?”

Mrs. Lombardi didn’t even glance at me.

Her gaze landed on Chloe, and her expression instantly softened.

“Chloe, darling, you look beautiful. I’ve always said white is your color.”

Chloe beamed.

“Thank you, Mrs. Lombardi.”

Mrs. Lombardi patted her hand before finally turning to me.

“Hannah, I thought you were a girl who knew how to conduct herself.”

“How could you make such a scene today?”

I straightened my spine.

“Mrs. Lombardi, I’m not the one making a scene. Dorian—”

“Enough.”

She cut me off sharply.

“I know my own son.”

“He and Chloe grew up together.”

“If you insist on seeing something sordid in their friendship, it only proves how insecure you are.”

She waved a dismissive hand.

“Stop making a spectacle for our guests. Sort this out and get on with the wedding.”

She then looked toward the officiant standing a short distance away.

“We’re changing the order of events. During the toasts, Hannah will speak first.”

“Her first toast will be to Chloe.”

I froze.

“What did you say?”

Mrs. Lombardi looked at me as if she’d said the most reasonable thing in the world.

“Chloe grew up without parents. For years, she has treated our family as her own.”

“She was by Dorian’s side while he was building his career. I know exactly how much she’s done for him.”

“Now that you’re marrying into this family, you will thank her.”

Matt immediately chimed in.

“Mrs. Lombardi is right.”

Kevin nodded.

“Come on, Hannah. Don’t keep everyone waiting.”

Dorian stood there, hands in his pockets, saying nothing.

His silence was its own answer.

Chloe put on a show of being overwhelmed with gratitude.

“Mrs. Lombardi, that’s not appropriate. How could I let Hannah toast me?”

Mrs. Lombardi’s face hardened.

“What’s not appropriate? If I say it’s appropriate, it is.”

She looked back at me.

“It’s just a toast. After everything she’s done for Dorian, is that too much to ask?”
