Before he knew it, Kieran had wandered to the entrance of a bar.

The music inside was loud enough to make his head pound.

Through the shifting silhouettes, he saw a familiar figure and pushed the door open.

Carla was wearing a short, tight dress, pressed up against another man.

Kieran sobered instantly.

He grabbed a decorative baseball bat from beside the door, rushed over, and smashed it into Carla’s head.

Blood gushed from the wound.

“Liar! You lied to me!”

Carla clutched her head and screamed, trying to back away.

“Stop! Stop hitting me!”

But Kieran couldn’t stop.

He struck her head again and again.

A full hundred times.

When he was done, he grabbed a fruit knife from the bar and plunged it into her lower abdomen.

The people around them scattered in terror.

A few seconds later, screams erupted as everyone fled for the exit.

Kieran stood over the pool of blood and suddenly laughed.

“Anyone who betrays me has to die.”

The bar quickly emptied.

The floor was slick with a mixture of spilled alcohol and blood.

Kieran had drunk too much. His foot slipped, and he fell backward.

The back of his head slammed against the metal edge of the bar. He died instantly.

My soul floated out from the wedding ring I had once worn.

Looking at their end, I felt no thrill of revenge, only the relief of a final, quiet conclusion.

Their souls drifted out of their bodies, and the moment they saw each other, they lunged, ready to tear each other apart all over again.

I didn’t watch.

I turned and floated back to Preston’s house.

He buried my ashes beneath the birch tree in the yard and shoveled the last scoop of soil over them.

“Blythe, if there’s another life, will you give me a chance? Will you let me marry you?”

I circled gently around him, and the wind stirred the hem of his clothes.
