He Thought I Loved Him, I Only Loved His Face Chapter 25

The words landed.

Rowan’s tears spilled over. He couldn’t hold them back.

He looked at her like an abandoned dog. Hoping for the smallest scrap of pity.

When he spoke again, his voice was shredded.

“Maya. You came to me because of Caleb. You threw me away without hesitation. You made the decision to divorce all on your own—was that ever your right?”

“I never knew about those divorce papers. They shouldn’t count.”

“How is it fair? You walk into my life. You walk out. Two people’s history. You decide everything alone. That’s not fair to me.”

Tears streamed down his face.

Maya let out a cold, quiet laugh.

“Fair?” She repeated the word like it was the funniest thing he’d ever said. “Rowan. There was only ever a transaction between us. No fairness. You used me as a painkiller. Where was fairness then? You shoved me down a flight of stairs for Piper. Where was your fairness?”

She looked at his pale face. No hatred in her eyes. Only exhaustion. Complete.

“You think you have the right to talk about feelings? You don’t even have the right to talk about the transaction anymore.”

The mockery in her voice was unmistakable.

Rowan had nothing to refute it.

Maya’s voice grew colder with every word. His face grew whiter.

He stammered. Still couldn’t let go.

“But you chased me for so long. We were married for years. All that time—did you never feel anything for me? Not even once?”

“Not even a little?”

Maya shook her head, firm. She wouldn’t even lie to soften it.

“Never.”

“I married you for one reason. To have a child.”

“Rowan. It was an equal exchange. We both had our selfish motives. Why obsess over what I felt?”

“Besides. You love Piper. Not me. Now you’re free to marry her. Leave me alone.”

“I love you.” Rowan’s voice broke completely. “Maya. I’ve figured it out. I look like Caleb. Let me be him. Please…”

“Please. Don’t leave me. Anything. I’ll do anything.”

Maya had never seen Rowan like this.

He was always the untouchable Mr. Cross.

Seldom humble. Never shattered.

Now he was on his knees, begging her to use him as a substitute.

Maybe he had many sides. This one, she had never glimpsed.

“Impossible.”

She looked at him. Her voice was calm.

“Don’t come here again. Next time, I call the police.”

She turned and walked inside. Didn’t look back.

Rowan stood there. Watched the door close.

He stood there like a lost child.

He never imagined it would end like this.

He touched his chest. It felt hollow.

He had lost something. Something that mattered more than he ever understood.
