He Thought I Loved Him, I Only Loved His Face Chapter 22

He Thought I Loved Him, I Only Loved His Face Chapter 22

“Wait. Maya. You told Dawson you’re pregnant?”

“And he took you to your prenatal appointment?”

Nora was beside herself.

“Yeah.” Maya’s tone was unbothered. “Everyone’s going to find out eventually. Telling him early doesn’t change anything.”

Nora sighed.

“Maya, you haven’t changed one bit after all these years. Dawson is stone-cold to everyone. Resting unapproachable face. Then you show up and suddenly he’s a peacock in full display. You seriously can’t see it?”

Nora’s colorful phrasing made Maya laugh out loud.

“Don’t you think you’re exaggerating? You really are a poet.”

“I’m observant,” Nora said, dead serious. “Honestly though. Think about it. I can vouch for his character. He’s nothing like that bastard Rowan Cross.”

The name dimmed Maya’s eyes for a second.

Rowan’s call resurfaced in her mind. A thread of unease.

She didn’t want Nora worrying. She smoothed her expression fast.

“He’s not my type. And I’m not in that headspace right now anyway. I just want to raise Callie well.”

Nora caught her misstep and pivoted immediately.

“Well, whatever you choose, I’m behind you. I’m Callie’s godmother, after all. Next appointment, tell me. I’ll go with you.”

“I will. Promise.”

After the call, Maya felt a little lighter.

But Rowan’s voice still nagged at her. A low hum of anxiety.

She wasn’t worried about herself. She was afraid he’d do something extreme. Something that could hurt the baby.

The tension made sleep impossible. She tossed and turned all night. Woke several times.

She dreamed she’d just given birth to Callie. Rowan snatched the baby and ran.

She chased him. Desperate. She could never catch up.

Agony and despair ripped her out of the dream.

Eyes open. Cold sweat on her forehead.

She checked her phone. 3:37 a.m.

She got up. Poured water. Went back to bed.

The dream’s horror clung to her. She couldn’t sleep again.

Her alarm went off at seven.

She sat up. Something felt off in her abdomen. She didn’t know if it was real or just her nerves.

She decided to go to the hospital.

She started to call Nora. Then remembered the big project meeting today. Let it go.

She got ready and went downstairs to hail a cab.

Twenty minutes. No car. Maybe the weather.

“Where are you headed? I’ll take you.”

A voice. Right there.
