He Thought I Loved Him, I Only Loved His Face Chapter 21

Maya ordered lemon tea and a slice of chocolate cake.

They went through the initial draft quickly. Then she sat there quietly, eating.

She finished the generous slice and still looked like she wanted more.

Dawson noticed. He nudged his own untouched cake toward her.

“Go ahead. I’m not much for sweets.”

He expected her to refuse.

She just said thanks and started eating.

It threw him.

Maya finished his cake in record time. She caught him staring.

“What? Why are you looking at me like that?”

Dawson watched her demolish the second slice. His mouth curved up. “I think the pastry chef here deserves a raise. It’s not every day you see a woman eat with such total, undivided devotion. It’s a privilege to watch.”

Maya looked at him flatly. “Are you saying I eat too much?”

“No.” His smile turned genuine. Open. “I’m saying watching you eat is an experience. Please. Continue.”

She couldn’t help laughing.

“I’m not offended. I’m just pregnant lately. I eat more.”

“Pregnant?”

Dawson choked on his lemon tea. Coughed hard.

She handed him a napkin.

“Does a female business partner being pregnant really warrant that kind of reaction, Mr. Reed?”

“No.” He was visibly flustered. “I was just surprised. Married that young. And pregnant. Taking on a director role here. That’s a lot.”

His eyes held clear disappointment. His words became noticeably more careful.

“Divorced already. I’m raising the baby on my own.”

Maya’s tone was even. No discernible emotion.

Dawson didn’t seem to know what to say.

“Don’t worry. You didn’t trigger some painful memory. I’ve made my peace with it.”

“The draft’s done. I’ll head out. Thanks for the treat.”

Dawson stood up as she rose. “Where are you going? Let me drive you. It’s easier.”

She didn’t refuse.

They left the café. Dawson held the car door for her. She thanked him.

Silence on the drive.

Until they reached the hospital.

Maya wasn’t fully familiar with the American hospital appointment system.

Dawson immediately offered to help.

He handled everything. Told her to wait in the seating area. Ran around. Got the paperwork sorted.

Even her OB-GYN praised him afterward. Said he was a very responsible husband.

Maya smiled. Didn’t correct the doctor.
