He Thought I Loved Him, I Only Loved His Face Chapter 10

“Piper. This is what you wanted to tell me?”

Rowan had rushed over to Piper’s place, frantic. She just said her ankle still hurt a little. She was worried about long-term damage.

He stood there, thrown.

His mind kept circling back to earlier. He’d refused to travel with Maya. Something about that felt wrong. Unsettling.

“What’s wrong? Are you mad at me?” Piper’s eyes filled with tears. “My ankle really hurts. I was alone and scared. That’s why I called you.”

“I won’t bother you next time.”

Rowan pulled her into a gentle hug.

“Of course not. You’re not feeling well. I’m just worried about you.”

“Let me take you to the hospital, okay?”

“No. I hate hospitals.”

Her voice was petulant.

Rowan’s tone was indulgent. “Be a good girl. That bag you wanted—I’ll get you one in every color.”

“Better.”

Once she agreed, Rowan drove her straight to the hospital for an exam.

The doctor said it was nothing serious. The pain was temporary. A few days of rest and she’d be fine.

Rowan told Piper to wait in the rest area while he handled the paperwork.

A doctor recognized him.

“You’re Maya Vale’s husband, right? She missed her follow-up appointment. For a pregnant woman, that’s dangerous. Family needs to be more attentive.”

Rowan’s feet stopped dead.

“Pregnant? She’s pregnant?”

The doctor frowned. “You’re her family. How do you not know something this significant? Last time she had that fall—it was already extremely dangerous.”

“Fights between couples shouldn’t involve recklessness like this. I strongly recommend you bring her in for a follow-up as soon as possible.”

The doctor’s expression was stern. A nurse called him away.

The word “pregnant” detonated inside Rowan’s skull.

He stood frozen.

When did she get pregnant?

The looser and looser clothes.

The herbal supplements she kept drinking.

He’d asked what she was drinking. She said it was just for her health.

He remembered shoving her down that staircase.

He remembered her helpless on the floor, surrounded by blood.

His hands started shaking.

Piper walked over, impatience in her voice. “Rowan, you still haven’t paid? I’ve been waiting forever.”

Rowan couldn’t hear her. He was already dialing Maya’s number.

Off.

He tried again. Call couldn’t connect.

He was blocked.

Veins bulged at his temple. He opened his messaging app and sent a series of question marks.

Red exclamation marks. One after another. Failed to send.

He turned and walked out.

Piper grabbed his sleeve.

“Where are you going?”

She stared at him. Confusion and urgency in her eyes.

“Wait here. I’ll be right back.”

Rowan shook her off and ran.
