Second Life Starts at My Own Murder Scene Chapter 07

“No! Daniel! Please don’t call the police!”

Lydia lunged at him like she had lost her mind and clung desperately to the hand holding his phone.

“I was wrong! I know I was wrong! I lost my head for a second! I’ll never do it again!”

“I’m begging you, please don’t call the police, okay? If my in–laws find out I ended up at a police station, they’ll force me

to get a divorce!”

“Daniel, I’m your sister!”

Snot and tears ran all over her face, her makeup completely ruined. She looked pathetic and miserable.

Dad didn’t soften in the slightest. He violently shook her off.

The second you decided to make a move on my daughter, you stopped being my sister.”

Seeing that Dad had made up his mind, Lydia turned and crawled across the floor to Mom.

“Megan! Megan, please talk to him for me, okay?”

“Megan, look, Evie’s perfectly fine, isn’t she? She doesn’t even have a scratch!”

“If Evie’s fine, then why are you all trying to ruin me? Do you have to drive me to my death before you’ll be happy?!”

The second I heard that, my eyes flew open in Mom’s arms.

Evie’s perfectly fine?

She doesn’t even have a scratch?

Was that what she called fine, after that silver needle pierced my skull in my last life, after that searing pain, after

eighteen years of living mentally impaired, drooling day after day, bullied by local thugs, and beaten by traffickers?

I shook with fury and burst into loud sobs again.

Eyes red. Morn kicked Lydia’s reaching hand away.

She looked at her as if she were staring at her father’s killer.

“Get away from us! Don’t touch my daughter!”

“Evie is fine because we got here in time! If we’d been even one second later, my daughter’s whole life would’ve been

destroyed!”

I will never let this go. The police are going to arrest you.”

Lydia went pale with despair.

In the end, she could only pin her hopes on Grandpa.

“Dad! Dad, please save me! I’m your daughter!”

“Can you really stand there and watch me go to prison, Dad?!”

Grandpa was crying openly by then.

His hands shook as he looked from the daughter on the floor to the granddaughter still sobbing in Mom’s arms.

One was his own flesh and blood.

And so was the other.

He opened his mouth, looking like he wanted to say something to smooth things over.

Then, at that exact moment, the moment that would decide Lydia’s fate, a sudden ringtone split through the room.

The shrill ringing was coming from the Louis Vuitton bag Lydia had dropped on the floor.

In a room packed tight with dread and silence, the sound was unbearably shrill.

Lydia glanced at the phone screen that had lit up inside the bag.

In the next second, her face turned the color of ashes, like she had seen a ghost.

With a shriek, she threw herself toward it, trying to snatch it back.

But Dad was faster.

He grabbed the phone first and looked at the caller ID.

Aunt Wanda

The look in Dad’s eyes turned glacial.

He stared at Lydia writhing on the floor, gave a cold laugh, and answered without a moment’s hesitation.

Then he switched the call to speaker and turned the volume all the way up.

A second later. Wanda’s voice care pouring through the room, deliberately lowered but brimming with smug satisfaction and excitement.

“Hello? Lydia? Is it done yet over there?”

“Your brother and the others are still downstairs looking for you like idiots. Nobody’s going upstatis to bother you right

now.”

“So? Did you get that needle into the little brat’s forehead yet?”

The entire room went dead silent.

Only Wanda’s vicious voice kept spilling from the phone.

“That was a piece of folk magic I went all the way out to the sticks for and paid big money to get from some backwoods

witch. All you have to do is take a four–inch needle and slide it right into the fontanelle.”

“There won’t even be a drop of blood on the outside! That little brat will turn into a drooling idiot on the spot!”

“Lydia, don’t you dare go soft on me!”

“Think about all the crap you’ve had to take from your in–laws! That dear brother of yours is always showing off how

close he is with his daughter right in front of you. He’s twisting the knife in your heart!”

“If his daughter turns brain–damaged, let’s see how smug he feels then!”

“Oh, and don’t forget our deal. Once this is done, you’d better make sure my son gets that department manager position

at your company!”

Each sentence hit like a bomb.

They exploded in our ears one after another.

They blew apart Grandpa’s last scrap of hope.

And they shattered the very last trace of family feeling Dad still had left for his sister.

“Shut up! Just shut up!”

Lydia let out a shrill, desperate scream and rolled across the floor like a madwoman, trying to grab the phone.

But then a sharp smack split the air.

The crack of the slap was so loud it stunned every person in the room.

It was Grandpa.

Grandpa, who had always been gentle and kind, who had never even spoken harshly to Lydia when she was growing up.

Now his whole body was shaking, and the hand he had raised was still trembling in the air.

He had slapped Lydia across the face with everything he had.

The blow split her lip open. Blood spilled from the corner of her mouth as she crashed to the floor, her head ringing

“You animal!”

Grandpa was sobbing openly as he pointed at her and shouted, “You vicious, rotten–hearted animal! I must have been blind. How did I raise something as evil as you?!”

“Over a little jealousy, you were willing to destroy your own niece’s entire life!”

“You don’t deserve to be called human!”

Then Grandpa turned to Dad, his voice breaking with grief.

“Call the police.”

“Call them now. Have this monster arrested. Let her go to prison. Let her rot in hell!”

Lydia collapsed onto the floor.

Her eyes went empty.

She knew it was over.
