Second Life Starts at My Own Murder Scene Chapter 06

“Evie! My Evie!”

Mom turned into a crazed lioness. She stopped caring about anything else and slammed straight into Lydia, who was

blocking her way.

A heavy thud echoed through the room.

Thrown off balance in her high heels, Lydia stumbled and crashed hard–onto the floor.

The long silver needle flew from her hand and hit the carpet with a sharp metallic clink.

Mom didn’t even spare her a glance.

She lunged for the crib, scooped me up in one motion, and crushed me against her chest.

Her tears fell onto my face like a flood breaking through a dam, and both her hands were trembling violently.

“Don’t be scared. Evie. Mommy’s here. Mommy’s right here…”

I did my part too. I cried with all the strength I had, clutching Mom’s collar as hard as I could and pouring every bit of

fear and grievance into those sobs.

Dad looked at me and Mom with raw pain in his eyes. Then he snapped his head around.

The blood vessels in his eyes looked like they were about to burst as he glared at Lydia, sprawled on the floor.

“What the hell were you trying to do?!”

“She’s your own niece!”

Grandpa rushed in too. He looked at the silver needle on the floor, then at Lydia shaking with fear, and nearly collapsed

on the spot.

“Lord help me, how did I raise a monster like you?!”

His finger shook as he pointed at her. “You took a needle that long and aimed it at the head of a baby who’s barely a

month old… Were you trying to kill her?!”

Faced with the evidence laid bare before her, Lydia went ghostly white.

But she recovered quickly. Panic flashed in her eyes, and she scrambled forward to grab the silver needle.

Dad stomped on her hand.

“Ah!” Lydia let out a scream of pain.

“Don’t touch it!” Dad bit out..

Tears were already streaming down Lydia’s face from the pain, but she still refused to give up and started making

excuses.

“Daniel! Daniel, you’ve got it all wrong! I wasn’t trying to hurt Evie!”

“I heard that using a silver needle to bless a baby can ward off evil and bad luck. I just wanted Evie to soak up some blessings so she’d grow up healthy!”

“A blessing?”

Dad let out a cold laugh, like he had just heard the most ridiculous joke of his life.

“Do you think I’m an idiot?!”

“What kind of blessing involves a needle that long aimed straight at a baby’s fontanelle?!”

“Do you even know how fragile a fontanelle is? If that needle went in, Evie might not die, but she’d be left mentally

impaired for the rest of her life!”

With every word Dad spoke, his voice rose higher.

The whole room seemed to vibrate with it.

“Daniel, I really didn’t know!” Lydia dissolved into pitiful, tear–drenched sobs and threw herself at his leg. “I don’t

understand these things. I was tricked! How could I ever hurt my own niece?”

Tricked by who?”

Dad looked down at her, his eyes cold as ice. “Who told you that? Find that person. I’ll go ask him myself exactly what

kind of blessing this is supposed to be.”

I… I…”

Lydia stammered, her eyes darting wildly. “I just overheard some old fortune–teller at the farmer’s market… I don’t even

know who he was…”

“Go on. Keep lying.”

Dad stared at the sister he had loved and protected for more than twenty years, and the disappointment in his face was

absolute.

Before this, no matter what she did wrong, he had always made allowances for her.

Whenever her in–laws mistreated her. Dad was the first one to step in and defend her

When she couldn’t conceive, he had even offered to support her for the rest of her life.

And now this same person, the family member he had cherished most, had tried to destroy the daughter he loved mest

in the world.

“If you’re not going to tell the truth, fine.”

Dad took a deep breath and pulled out his phone.

“Manager, please shut the door and make sure no one contaminates the scene.”

“I’m calling the police right now. Let them find out what’s on this needle and who taught you a method this vicious.

The moment Lydia heard the words “calling the police,” she completely fell apart.

She slumped onto the floor like all the bones had melted out of her body.
