The Day I Miscarried, He Was Delivering Another Woman’s Baby Chapter 12

Until one day. A colleague told me someone was outside looking for me.

My chest tightened. I already knew who it was.

I pushed open the tent flap and walked out.

It was Soren.

He stood in the sand with a suitcase. Looking right at me.

Our current outpost was remote.

I didn’t know how he’d found his way here.

The man who used to be fastidious to an extreme—who couldn’t stand a speck of dust—now stood there with dirt on his clothes. His hair was fried from the sun. Stubble covered his jaw.

His jacket, once perfectly fitted, hung loose on his frame.

When he saw me, his shoulders dropped. Like he was finally allowed to breathe.

“Alessa. You’re alive. Thank God.”

“I heard this place was bombed yesterday. So many dead. I was terrified…”

He reached for my hand. Stopped halfway.

“I know about the baby. And your parents. I was a bastard. I failed you.”

“Come back with me. Please. It’s too dangerous here.”

I looked at him. My voice held no warmth.

“Soren. We’re divorced. What standing do you have to ask me to leave?”

“And what makes you think I would give up my life—again—to go back and clean your house and take care of you?”

“I like my work. It makes me feel like my life means something. I won’t leave with you. Go back.”

Soren lowered his head. Humiliation written across his face.

“Yes. I know how much you gave up for me.”

“I never loved Tessa. I just saw her chasing her goals and it reminded me of who you used to be… I was a fool.”

I listened. All I felt was the bitter irony.

“So you remembered all along. The person I used to be.”

“And you were also the one who—in the name of love and family—made me step off that path one inch at a time.”

“I don’t regret the choices I made back then. But when I saw what you wrote to Tessa—’I will always support your dream’—I realized what a joke I had been.”

“It’s not that you don’t know how to respect someone’s ambitions. You just never thought to give that respect to me.”

“Stop making excuses for yourself. You wanted everything. You just wanted other people to pay the price.”

“My child isn’t coming back. My parents aren’t coming back. So whatever you say—I will never forgive you.”

“Here’s a piece of advice. The temperature swing here is brutal. There are no extra beds. If you don’t want to freeze to death, get far away from me.”

I turned and walked back into my tent.
