The Day I Miscarried, He Was Delivering Another Woman’s Baby Chapter 03

I hung up and started packing.

There was nothing left in this house worth keeping.

Except for the sweater my mother knitted for me before she died. That, I was taking with me.

When I was little, my mother was always making me clothes.

Later, when I grew up and her eyesight wasn’t what it used to be, I stopped letting her use her needles.

After I got pregnant, I was suddenly always cold.

She hid it from me and knitted another sweater. Her eyes were red and strained, but she acted like nothing was wrong.

“Handmade keeps you warmer. I picked out the best wool I could find.”

“You worry about the baby in your belly. I worry about mine.”

I couldn’t bring myself to wear it.

But now, the sweater was gone.

I was about to call Soren when Tessa posted a new Instagram story.

*”I just said the newborns were cold, and someone immediately sent sweaters over~”*

*”Babies say thank you daddy. They’re so warm, and the material is so soft.”*

So Soren had gone to celebrate with her. A party for newborn puppies.

In the photo, their heads were pressed together. Bodies close.

Each of them held three puppies.

I recognized it instantly.

The “clothes” on those dogs had been cut apart with scissors, the edges raw and fraying, pinned onto the animals with safety pins. My mother’s sweater.

When I pushed open the pet shop’s glass door, Soren and Tessa were eating a cupcake with the same spoon.

Soren was pathologically fastidious.

At home, his utensils were sanitized separately. He insisted on serving spoons for every meal.

Once, after cleaning the house all day, I was dying of thirst and drank from his glass.

He said nothing at the time.

That evening, the glass was in the trash.

He explained it later. Said it was a habit from the hospital.

Turns out that habit had exceptions.

Tessa saw me. She raised a brow. Her smile was artificial.

“Alessa’s here? Soren and I have been close since we were kids. Don’t read into it.”

She turned to Soren.

“I told you she’d never divorce you.”

“Look at her career. You’re basically supporting her. If she leaves you, what’s she going to raise a kid with? What about her parents? See? She chased you all the way here.”

“I could never do that. I just run my shop. I support myself.”

Soren laughed and tapped the tip of her nose.

“You’re the one who talks.”

Then he looked at me like he was placating a child having a tantrum.

“Alright, Alessa. Since you came all the way here, I’ll take it as you wanting to put this behind us. I’ll pretend I never heard the word divorce.”

“Go home first and tidy up the house. These puppies were just born. Their condition is still unstable. I need to stay with Tessa a few more days.”

Listening to them talk, all I felt was something approaching hilarity.

One of them openly carried on with a married man.

The other talked about cheating like he was making a principled argument.

I didn’t look at Soren. I fixed my eyes on Tessa.

“Miss Tessa, since you’re so independent, stealing another woman’s husband wasn’t enough? You had to steal my clothes too?”

“You claim you live by your own merit. Is wrecking marriages your merit?”

Several women browsing pet supplies nearby turned to look.

One spoke up.

“You two aren’t together? Then sharing a spoon just now… that’s pretty inappropriate, isn’t it?”

Another frowned.

“Right. I even said you two looked good together earlier, and you didn’t deny it. He has a wife?”
