Five Years a Secret, Now I Deny We Ever Met Chapter 06

Before I could speak, Isabella rushed forward, clinging to Sebastian’s arm in tears.

“No! Mr. Julian is lying!” she sobbed, as if she were the one who had been wronged. “I’m Seb’s girlfriend! We’ve always been together!”

Sebastian’s body went rigid. He looked at me, his eyes a battlefield of warring emotions. His lips moved, but in the end, he said nothing, letting Isabella coil around him like a vine.

I watched him coldly.

Of course. The moment I’d shredded those research notes, I had stopped expecting him to act like a man.

Under the stunned eyes of the entire room, I gathered the ridiculous bridesmaid dress and walked toward Julian.

Ignoring the surprise in his eyes, I gracefully took another glass of champagne from a passing server’s tray.

“Please, don’t misunderstand. Isabella is right,” I said, my voice clear and calm, instantly silencing the whispers. “She is, of course, Sebastian’s girlfriend.”

“And I,” I turned to Julian, raised my glass to him, and curved my lips into a polite smile, “am the next recipient of the Julian Foundation’s Florence Scholar Program.”

With that, I turned to the dumbfounded Professor Albright, my face a mask of perfect apology.

“I’m sorry, Professor. I didn’t mention my post-graduation plans because I wanted it to be a surprise. I won this fellowship on my own merit. The process was just… a little complicated.”

Sebastian watched as I stood shoulder to shoulder with Julian, our champagne glasses touching under the lights. His eyes went red.

“Chloe!” he shouted, losing all control. “Do you have any idea what you’re saying?”
