He Said Don’t Wait, So I Married Someone Else Chapter 37

*Come to the Whitaker estate. Alone. If you don’t, what happens to Sloane for her betrayal is on you. You know I can always make her life a living hell.*
My heart dropped. Using Sloane to threaten me—it was a move I hadn’t anticipated. He knew I wouldn’t soften for him, but he also knew I couldn’t stand by while another woman was ruined because of me.
Going there was a terrible idea.
But not going felt worse. This would never end. Garrett would cling to us like a disease, finding new ways to poison the life I was trying to build.
I picked up my phone and called Jenna.
“Are you insane?” she shrieked. “Noah specifically told you to stay put! Garrett is a cornered animal right now. He will tear you apart.”
I walked to the window and looked out at the uniformed security guard patrolling the grounds. Noah had built me a fortress, but I couldn’t live inside it forever.
“Jenna, this nightmare started with Garrett and me,” I said, my voice so calm it surprised even myself. “It has to end with me.”
“Maya, don’t—”
“I know what Noah said.” I cut her off, my gaze fixed on the distant roof of the Whitaker mansion, a place that looked dark even in the bright Charleston sun. “But sometimes, a woman has to end her own nightmare.”
I hung up, grabbed my car keys, and walked to the front door.
The security guard moved to block my path. “Mr. Caldwell’s orders were that you are not to—”
“I am Mrs. Caldwell,” I said, my tone leaving no room for argument. “Now, please open the gate.”
