He Said Don’t Wait, So I Married Someone Else Chapter 19

I didn’t hesitate. My finger slid across the screen. Noah and Jenna both stared at me.
“Catherine?” My voice was steadier than I felt.
“Maya.” Her voice had the same polished, Southern belle cadence as always, but it was dipped in acid. “I heard about your little… performance in Las Vegas.”
I gripped the phone tighter. “I don’t think a legal marriage qualifies as a performance.”
A dry, dismissive laugh. “Oh, darling. Rushing into a courthouse with another man hours after my son was called away on a family emergency? That was absolutely a performance. A rather pathetic one, if you ask me.” She paused, her tone shifting to one of magnanimous pity. “Now, Garrett is very upset. I’m sure you don’t want this to escalate into a public spectacle.”
“Are you threatening me?” My blood ran cold.
“I’m stating a fact. The Whitaker family has deep roots in this city.” Her voice hardened, the velvet glove sliding off an iron fist. “Agree to the annulment, Maya. We can let this all go away quietly, like a bad dream you had in a moment of pique.”
I was shaking with fury. “My marriage to Noah is legal and valid, Catherine. I won’t agree to anything.”
