He Said Don’t Wait, So I Married Someone Else Chapter 18

*Petition for Annulment.*
Petitioner: Garrett Whitaker.
I skimmed the rest, my stomach churning. In the legalese, Garrett claimed that when I had married Noah, I was in a state of “mental incapacity caused by extreme emotional distress,” and therefore “lacked the civil capacity” to enter into a contract.
The document painted me as a hysterical, vengeful lunatic.
It painted Noah as an “opportunistic predator” who had “used his professional standing to coerce” me.
“This is disgusting,” Jenna breathed, her voice shaking with rage. “This is character assassination.”
“They’re daring us,” Noah said from behind me. His voice was cold. At some point, he had come to stand beside me, his gaze falling on the document as if it were a piece of trash. “In Charleston, the Whitaker legal team can make black look white. They think if they pressure the judge, or if you lose your cool on the stand, they can make this stick.”
A chill started in my toes and spread through my body. This wasn’t just an insult. It was a carefully laid legal trap. They wanted to brand me as mentally unstable, turn my marriage into a joke, and define me for the rest of my life.
Just then, my phone rang.
The name flashing on the screen made the air in the room turn to ice.
Catherine Whitaker.
Garrett’s mother.
I had to answer.
