He Wanted an Heir, So I Gave Him Ashes Chapter 20

The sight of blood sent Daisy into a panic. She hurried to pull Beau to her side.

“How could you do that? He’s your father!”

Beau was still crying and talking back.

“He hit me, so I don’t like him! You never hit me!”

Daisy’s heart suddenly felt hollow.

For years, she had treated Beau as her ultimate bargaining chip, indulging his every whim. She was afraid he would suffer, afraid Rhett would be unhappy, and in her fear, she had smothered him with love.

Now, for the first time, she felt a flicker of regret.

What if Rhett stopped liking Beau?

What if, one day, he decided he wanted another child with another woman?

Like… the child he might have had with Ellie.

Daisy didn’t dare think any further.

She threw herself beside Rhett, apologizing over and over. She tried to pull a still-crying Beau over, forcing him to admit he was wrong.

But Beau refused. He flung her hand away and ran out through a gap in the crowd of servants.

Daisy couldn’t catch him and had to stay by Rhett’s side.

“I’m sorry, Rhett. I didn’t teach him well. I’ll be stricter from now on.”

Rhett lifted his eyes and looked at her. There was no anger in his gaze, only a tired emptiness. Then he closed his eyes.

In that moment, he missed Ellie terribly.

Whenever he’d gotten hurt at the stables, Ellie would be by his side in an instant, calmly pulling disinfectant wipes and bandages from the first-aid kit. Her hands would tremble slightly with nerves, but her movements were always professional and careful.

And now, the person beside him was not her.

News of Rhett’s injury quickly reached the old family home.

Before long, both of Rhett’s parents arrived. When they heard he had been injured by the child Daisy had borne him, their hearts were already hardened against her.

Daisy, however, was desperate to make a good impression.

She wanted to take advantage of Ellie’s absence, to do everything she could to establish herself with her future in-laws.

But the harder she tried—bringing water, handing over towels, anxiously explaining herself—the more repellent she seemed. Every action was so deliberate, so full of calculation.
