He turned.

It wasn’t Ellie.

It was Daisy.

The light in Rhett’s eyes died. His disappointment was undisguised.

“Why is it you?”

Daisy’s fragile mask faltered.

“Were you hoping it was me?” she asked. After a beat, she pressed softly, “The butler said you were looking for Ellie. Is she missing?”

Rhett was silent for a moment before denying it stiffly. “She’s just angry. She’ll be back in a few days.”

A flicker of brightness crossed Daisy’s eyes. She lowered her head, feigning concern.

“As long as she didn’t leave because of me.”

Of course she didn’t want Ellie to come back.

It would be best if she never came back.

Rhett didn’t respond.

He was about to check his phone for a message from Ellie when the CFO of the family business called, his voice more panicked than Rhett had ever heard.

“Rhett! Something’s happened! Half of our core land assets and liquid funds have been frozen by a forced sale agreement!”

Rhett’s mind went blank. “What agreement?”

“It has your signature on it! The buyer is Cole Hayes! The entire board is waiting for an explanation!”

Rhett rushed into the study to get to his computer.

But the moment he pushed the door open, he froze.

A huge part of the room was missing.

Only then did he remember that this space, once his alone, had at some point become half Ellie’s.

She had always been here with him. While he cleaned his rifles, she worked on those tedious business documents at her own desk.

The room had been divided in two.

One half was his guns and saddles, the Walker family’s past.

The other half was her documents and blueprints, the Walker family’s future.

And now, her half was empty.
