He Wanted an Heir, So I Gave Him Ashes Chapter 04

Not long after Rhett and I reconciled, Daisy reappeared.

She stood at the door of my study, one hand clutching her stomach, her face pale, begging me to give her an out.

“I’m pregnant with Rhett’s child,” she said, her eyes swimming with tears. “Mrs. Walker, please, let me have this baby. The Walker family needs an heir.”

The news clearly blindsided Rhett. He stood beside me, unable to meet my eyes.

“Ellie… we were really over. This must have been… from before.” He stumbled through the explanation, then changed tack, his voice dropping. “My father has always wanted a grandson.”

He was testing me.

I looked at the man before me and felt like I was seeing a stranger.

Calmly, I asked, “And if I don’t agree?”

Rhett fell silent.

The silence stretched, a needle puncturing the fragile illusion of peace between us.

In the end, he didn’t answer. He just turned and steadied the swaying Daisy.

“You don’t look well. I’ll take you home.”

He escorted her away as if she were the wife who needed to be carefully protected.

That night, I locked myself in my study and, page by page, tore apart the five-year business plan for the Walker Group that I had drafted with my own hands. Those lines and numbers, once our shared dream, were now just a mockery.

When Rhett came back, he saw the wreckage on the floor.

His expression shifted, and he moved to hold me.

I stepped back, avoiding his touch.

“Choose. Me or her.”

He froze, staring at me for a long time. So long I thought he would choose silence again.

“Daisy agreed to terminate the pregnancy,” he finally said, his voice heavy with exhaustion. “This time, it’s over for good.”

Only then did the tension in my body begin to ease.

In that moment, at least, it seemed he had chosen me.

But from that day on, everything was different.

After Daisy’s supposed “miscarriage,” Rhett bought her a house and a car in town, covering all her living expenses under the guise of “compensation.”

I fought with him over it. This went far beyond any reasonable amends.

And every time, Rhett used the same words to shut me down.

“I did what you asked.”

“I gave up my own child for you.”

“She lost a baby because of me. Is basic financial support too much to ask?”

Those words were a dull knife, cutting me again and again. In his telling, I was the cold-blooded, heartless woman.

A crushing exhaustion washed over me.

Seeing the weariness on my face, he came over, his tone almost sorrowful. “Ellie, you never used to be like this. You were the most rational, generous woman I knew.”
