He Said Don’t Wait, So I Married Someone Else Chapter 09

Garrett’s eyes darted between us, his face a mask of disbelief and fury. “Maya… please. We can fix this. I’ll do better. I promise—”
“You always promise,” I said, feeling a strange sense of calm. “And I’m done waiting.”
“So this is it? Three years, just… over?”
“It was over the moment you chose Sloane in Las Vegas, Garrett,” I said, each word a final, heavy stone. “I just made it official.”
He stood there for a long moment, his gaze shifting between us, desperate. Finally, he seemed to deflate, turning and disappearing back into the shadows of the oak trees.
The second he was gone, I let out a breath I didn’t know I’d been holding. My muscles went slack, and I sagged back against Noah’s solid frame.
“Are you okay?” he murmured into my hair.
“Yes,” I breathed, burying my face in the clean, crisp scent of his suit jacket. “Yes, I really am.”
“Good.” He kissed the top of my head. “Then let’s go back to our party, Mrs. Caldwell. I believe I owe you another dance.”
But when we stepped back into the light, I realized every eye was on us. The cheerful chatter had died, replaced by a thick, expectant silence.
In Charleston, gossip travels faster than fire.
