Reborn as the Romance Heroine, I Only Aim for First Place Chapter 14

Afraid that something might happen if my acceptance packet was mailed home, I had it sent to the school counseling office instead.

But when I went to pick it up, I ran into Evan.

He had also had his acceptance packet sent to school.

Chelsea stood behind him with an openly smug smile on her face.

…

I went straight to my counselor and picked up my acceptance packet. Halfway through opening it, I suddenly turned around.

“Chelsea, when you came to my house that day, did you tamper with my enrollment response in the admitted-student portal while using my laptop?”

Chelsea froze for a moment, then forced herself to look natural.

“What are you talking about? I don’t know.”

I looked at her coldly.

“There’s a camera in my room. You can’t deny it.”

Chelsea choked. Beside her, Evan stepped out from behind her.

He seemed to know about Chelsea tampering with the portal too, because he immediately pulled her behind him protectively.

“Why are you trying to scare her? Chelsea was just playing a joke on you. How could she possibly change your enrollment response?”

“She did. I have the footage.”

He looked down at me from above, a mocking curve lifting the corner of his mouth.

“So what if she did? Consider it your punishment.”

I pressed my lips together.

“Evan, do you know that tampering with someone else’s admissions portal is a crime? People can go to jail for that.”

Evan’s brows tightened.

“You have good grades. Taking a gap year and reapplying wouldn’t be the end of the world. Do you really have to go after her over this?”

“Do you understand that if Chelsea gets a criminal record, her whole life will be ruined? You would only have to reapply next year, but you want to ruin her entire life. How can you be this vicious?”

Once again, Evan’s worldview managed to shock me.

In my mind, I silently asked the System, “This is your male lead?”

The System covered its face and said nothing. It seemed to find him a little ridiculous too.

“But…”

I held up the MIT acceptance packet in my hand and waved it in front of him.

“My enrollment response wasn’t changed.”

My counselor hurried over from the side and pushed another

enrollment packet into Evan’s hands.

“Evan, why is this enrollment packet from Alaska? Where did you commit?”

Evan did not seem to understand at first. Almost on instinct, he tore open the package.

Then, with trembling hands, he pulled out the enrollment confirmation from some unknown community college in Alaska.

I smiled.

“It was your enrollment response she changed.”

The System was stunned.

“What? She changed Evan’s enrollment response?”

A flicker of amusement crossed my eyes.

Evan and I had grown up together. I knew his birthday and student ID, and I had even peeked at his SAT admission ticket in advance.

His temporary password had been generated from his student information. After his first login, he had changed it, of course.

But because we had grown up together, I also knew his favorite password pattern: a mix of his name and birthday.

After a few tries, I got in.

The day Chelsea asked to borrow my laptop, I had already opened Evan’s admitted-student portal.

Then I scrolled the page just enough to hide Evan’s account

information at the top.

Chelsea was afraid I would catch her, so she would definitely act as fast as possible. She would never stop to look carefully.

“That day, I was logged into your account.”

Chelsea’s face went white in an instant.

Evan opened his mouth.

“How did you get into my account?”

I shrugged.

“Wasn’t I supposed to have a crush on you? Wanting to see where you were going is perfectly normal, isn’t it?”

“Besides, I didn’t alter your enrollment response. I only looked at the page, which isn’t the same as tampering with it.”

Chelsea screamed, “Impossible! You’re lying to me. This is impossible!”

She rushed to snatch the packet from Evan’s hands.

Evan stood there blankly, not moving at all.

I said with regret, “What a shame, Evan. The reply deadline has passed, and that enrollment response isn’t something you can simply undo. Looks like you’re stuck with community college.”

“You have good grades. Taking a gap year and reapplying wouldn’t be the end of the world. Don’t hold it against Chelsea.”

“After all, if Chelsea gets a criminal record, her whole life will be

ruined. You only have to reapply next year, right?”

Evan stood frozen for a long time.

Then, all at once, he grabbed Chelsea’s wrist.

“You really changed my enrollment response? How could you change my enrollment response?”

“Do you know this means I have to take a gap year and reapply? You —”

His eyes were bloodshot with rage, and he nearly crushed Chelsea’s wrist in his grip.

Chelsea’s eyes reddened.

“Evan, you’re hurting me.”

But Evan only tightened his grip.

“You made me lose a year!”

I watched coldly from the side, wanting only to laugh.

Sure enough, it was easy to preach forgiveness when you were not the one bleeding.

Behind me, Evan and Chelsea were still fighting. I was about to leave.

But Evan called out to me.

His eyes were red.

“Tessa, you did this on purpose.”

I widened my eyes.

“I can’t see the future. How could I have done it on purpose?”

“Have a great summer. Oh, sorry, I forgot.”

I smiled.

“You won’t. You’ll be taking a gap year and reapplying.”
