He Begged Me To Stay After I Had Already Left Chapter 07

Chase had no idea how he got out of the hospital.

The sunlight outside was blinding, but he felt like he had fallen into a frozen abyss.

At last, he understood why Nina had always looked so detached.

Because pain was all she had left in this world.

And every bit of that pain had been inflicted by him.

He remembered the way she had looked at him in the end.

There had been no hatred in her eyes, only sorrow and pity.

That look hurt him more than death ever could.

His phone vibrated. It was a WhatsApp message from Sophie.

Sophie: [Chase, you missed school all day. I’ve been really worried about you.]

Sophie: [Will you come over for dinner tonight? I’ll cook for you myself.]

Looking at the words on the screen, Chase suddenly laughed.

It looked worse than crying.

Chase replied: [Sure.]

At seven that evening, Chase arrived at the Suttons’ mansion right on time.

Sophie was wearing a white dress, looking like some innocent little bunny.

“Chase, you’re finally here!”

She rushed over happily and tried to slip her arm through his.

He moved away without making it obvious.

“Let’s eat,” he said coldly.

The dining table was covered with an elaborate spread.

Sophie kept placing food onto Chase’s plate.

“Chase, try this. I learned how to make it just for you.”

He looked at the food in front of him and never lifted his fork.

“Sophie, do you know the bleached-blond punk’s cousin?”

Her hand froze mid-motion, and all the color drained from her face.

“W-what cousin? I don’t know who you mean.”

Chase lifted his eyes and stared at her.

“You paid him to fake that pregnancy report, didn’t you?”

The fork slipped from Sophie’s hand and clattered onto the table.

“Chase, what are you talking about? I don’t understand.”

“That report was obviously something Nina…”

Bang.

Chase flipped the entire table over in one violent motion.

The crash of shattering dishes rang through the dining room.

Sophie screamed and collapsed onto the floor in terror.

Chase walked toward her step by step and looked down at her from above.

“You’re still pretending.”

He pulled a stack of photos from his pocket and hurled them at her face.

“You hired the girl who cut the sound system wires at the school showcase.”

“The one who paid off the bleached-blond punk at the bar was you.

“And the one who bribed an orderly at the hospital to falsify Nina’s medical records was you too.”

The photos scattered across the floor, each one undeniable proof.

Sophie looked at them and started trembling uncontrollably.

“N-no… It wasn’t like that…”

“Chase, please let me explain.”

She threw herself at his legs, crying like her heart was breaking.

“I did all of it because I love you.”

“Nina was always trying to keep you all to herself. I was jealous of her. I was terrified of losing you.

“I just wanted her out of your life. I never meant for her to die.”

Chase kicked her off him, his eyes full of disgust.

“You love me? This is what your love looks like? Destroying another person?”

“Do you have any idea how sick she was?”

“Do you have any idea how completely you all drove her into a corner?”

Sophie shook her head through her sobs.

“I didn’t know she was really sick. I thought she was faking it.”

“Chase, I was wrong. Please forgive me.”

He let out a cold laugh.

“Forgive you? You think you deserve that?”
