The Dice Said Divorce, but He Thought I’d Stay Chapter 06

“A follow-up?” His grip on the phone tightened.

Audrey was sick? And she hadn’t told him? The voice on the line didn’t give him time to catch up.

“Yes, the follow-up for her abortion procedure. She signed herself out early, and we’ve been concerned about her recovery. Hello? Sir? Are you still there?”

She wasn’t bluffing. She’d actually gone through with it.

That text hadn’t been anger talking. She loved kids — he knew that better than anyone.

She’d talked about wanting a baby more times than he could count. After she found out she was pregnant, she’d asked him — again and again — to come to her appointments.

He never went. Not once. Every free hour went to Chloe.

How many times had he let her down? Only now — far too late — did he see what he’d done to his own wife.

The sheer arrogance of knowing someone will never leave — it had carved a rift between them he’d been too blind to see.

He’d been so wrong it was almost laughable. Could he blame Chloe?

No. He was the one who’d done all of this — every arrogant, careless inch of him.

He crushed the file in his fist. Then he climbed to the attic and sat with their wedding photo until morning.

In the photo, her smile was soft, effortless — and so beautiful it hurt to look at now.

Chloe had said once — just once — that the wedding photo in the living room was ugly. He’d taken it down that same day.

He didn’t even ask Audrey. Was that when her smile started to fade?

He already knew the answer. Harrison felt the tears before he knew they were coming.

They fell onto the love letter Audrey had written him years ago.

Wait for me, Audrey. I’m coming. I’ll bring you home.

His fists clenched. He meant every word.

The search for Audrey turned up something he hadn’t expected.

Audrey wasn’t the orphan everyone believed her to be. She had a grandfather.

Arthur — a Silverwood-born mogul who had once dominated the financial world in Cresthaven. After he lost his only son and daughter-in-law, he’d stepped back from public life and poured everything into charity.

Why had she kept this from him? It didn’t matter right now. He’d ask her himself when he found her.

Within days, he’d cleared his entire schedule and boarded the first flight out. The ground fell away beneath him, and for the first time in days, the knot in his chest loosened — just barely.

Once he saw her face-to-face, he could fix this. He was sure of it. He would make up for every single thing he’d put her through.

But when he arrived in Westbridge, he wasn’t prepared for what he found. It hadn’t even been that long.

Audrey — his Audrey — was walking hand in hand with another man.
