Julian’s hand froze in mid-air.

“What did you just say? Where did she get that kind of money? Did Legal trace the source to make sure there are no issues?”

“Finance has already confirmed it. The paper trail is completely clean, and the buyout payment is fully legitimate.”

After hanging up the phone, a rare look of bewilderment crossed Julian’s face. For the first time, he realized that things were spiraling completely out of his control.

Three years ago, when Evelyn signed her exclusive representation agreement with Blackwood Entertainment, he had drafted the terms himself. He had set the breach-of-contract penalty exceptionally high — bordering on absurd. His reasoning back then was simple: this way, she would never be able to escape him. He thought it was an unbreakable iron chain binding her to his agency. He never imagined that one day, she would take a blade and sever it in a single stroke.

Where exactly had she gotten the money? But even more terrifying than that question was another realization creeping into his mind: she might be leaving him for good.

A sudden wave of intense frustration washed over Julian. When had he and Evelyn ended up like this?

At that moment, his gaze collided with Chloe’s. Terrified by the dark look in his eyes, she instinctively took a step back. “Julian, why are you looking at me like that?”

But Julian’s expression suddenly shifted to one of cold clarity. He

clapped his hands twice, and two security guards immediately stepped forward. “Confiscate her phone and escort her out. I’m going to use her as leverage to teach Evelyn a lesson.

At the departure hall of Los Angeles International Airport, I dragged my suitcase into the terminal. Dressed in a black trench coat and hiding behind sunglasses and a mask, I walked up to the check-in kiosk and handed over my ID and passport.

“Ms. Sterling, your flight from Los Angeles to Washington D.C. departs at 11:50. First class, window seat,” the ground staff said with a warm smile as she printed my boarding pass. “Have a wonderful trip.”

I took the pass and murmured a quiet thank you.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. Pulling it out, I saw it was Julian’s number again. I didn’t answer. Instead, I navigated to my eSIM settings, permanently deleted the line, and tossed the phone into a nearby trash can.

John and I had already arranged a time; he was going to pick me up as soon as I landed. Over the past few days, we had connected via iMessage and chatted on and off. I found him far more interesting than I had initially expected, and we seemed to share a lot of common ground. Because of that, I was actually looking forward to meeting him today.

“Attention passengers traveling to Washington D.C.: Your flight is now boarding.”

I stood up and dragged my suitcase toward the gate. Just then, a flurry of frantic footsteps echoed from behind me.

“Evelyn, wait!”
