I Catfished a Billionaire Using My Bully’s Photo Chapter 05

Talia went to the thirty-fourth floor.

And just like that, I was the only new intern left in the office.

They gossiped about Talia for a while, but eventually the thrill wore off.

So they turned their sights on me.

“Hey, Evelyn, didn’t you say you were gonna buy everyone bubble tea? You’re not backing out now, are you?”

“Evelyn, I need to pick up my son from school tonight — can you just finish this up for me real quick?”

“Evelyn, I heard you graduated from a top university. You must be crazy competent, right? Here, take this…”

Before I knew it, the folders in front of me had piled up into a small mountain.

By the time I finally dug my way out of all that busywork, it was past eight at night.

I stretched my aching back and finally had a moment to check my phone.

A message from my dad popped up immediately.

“Sweetheart, your mom and I have gone without so much — scrimping, saving — just to raise you right.

This internship didn’t come easy, and you need to keep that in mind.

Don’t compare yourself to other people.

You can’t afford to.

Get along with your coworkers.

Some things just blow over if you let them.

Be diligent — get to the office early every day, clean up a little, pour your boss some water.

Do that long enough, and he’ll start seeing you differently.

Getting that permanent offer will only be a matter of time.”

I stared at the screen, my fingers hovering over the keyboard, completely at a loss for how to respond.

Finally, I let out a long sigh, opened my social feed, and started scrolling.

Talia had posted a selfie three hours ago.

She was standing in front of a massive floor-to-ceiling window, flashing a peace sign at the camera, her smile bright and bold — like a gorgeous little fox.

The caption read: Another day of hard work. Shoutout to my amazing boss for believing in me.

My thumb paused over the screen.

I couldn’t stop myself from zooming in.

In the reflection of the window, there was a silhouette.

Someone standing at the far end of the office, turned to the side, seemingly lost in thought — unaware of the camera.

Even as a blurry outline, I recognized him instantly.

It was Ethan.

I stared at that photo for what felt like forever, completely lost in it, until a voice sounded right above my head.

“It’s this late — why aren’t you off work yet?”

I jumped, practically levitating out of my chair, and instinctively grabbed the ashtray off the desk, spinning around.

A short, heavyset man stood there in round black-rimmed glasses, studying me with open curiosity.

I froze — he looked familiar.

After a beat, it clicked.

The supervisor had introduced him.

He was another one of Ethan’s assistants.

Channing, I think.

I quickly dropped the ashtray and forced an awkward explanation.

“Just, uh — got caught up with work. I’m heading out now.”

“Oh, right, right.”

Secretary Channing was clutching his stomach, his whole face twisted in pain.

He turned to leave, then stopped, grimacing over his shoulder.

“Hey — you. Do you have a license? Can you drive?”

I blinked, then nodded.

“Yeah, I do, I—”

Before I could finish, his eyes lit up and he tossed his keys straight into my hands.

“I can’t take this anymore. My stomach is killing me. The boss’s car is downstairs. I’ll text you the address. Just drive Mr. Shaw’s car back for me — please, please. I’ll owe you dinner. Big dinner. Ow, ow, ow.”

He was already retreating, still talking.

“And when you’re done, just grab a cab home — company’ll reimburse you—”

I stared down at the keys in my hand, brain scrambling.

“No, wait — I can’t, I—”

But Secretary Channing was already gone, clutching his gut as he disappeared into the bathroom.
