Three Chances for the Amnesiac Don Chapter 09

## Cordelia’s POV

I must have slept an eternity.

I stirred awake, met with the harsh, glaring white of a hospital ward—and realised I was still alive.

The smell of burning flesh made me think I was already in hell.

But then, my phone alarm went off. It was the lullaby I used to record for myself to sleep.

It became my salvation whenever the nightmares came.

Maybe it was Grandma watching over me. She didn’t want me to die so pathetically.

It was her voice telling me to live that gave me the strength to kick open the door just before the explosion and plunge into the freezing East River.

A fishing boat pulled me out.

The first thing I did was call Alistair. He told me Seraphina was in custody. Leo had delivered the evidence.

Phineas had agreed to it.

I paused, stunned. It was worth it, then—pushing Leo out of the passenger seat before the crash.

Once the shock wore off, I begged Alistair to hide me somewhere quiet to heal.

Once he learned my own mother and Phineas were the architects of all my agony, he and his wife Rose took long-term leave to look after me full-time.

Then Phineas found me.

“Cordelia, I’m here to take you home.”

Before I could pull away, he lunged forward and locked me tight in his embrace.

Behind him, my mother saw me and burst into tears.

“My baby girl… thank God you’re alive…”

Alistair and Rose ran in.

Seeing them, Alistair’s face darkened. “What are you doing here? You’re not welcome!”

He yanked Phineas off me and punched him square in the jaw.

“Don Wren, are you suicidal? Showing your face to a federal agent?!”

“You bastard! How dare you come near Cordelia?! Did you come to finish the job?!”

Phineas didn’t fight back. He took the hits, then sank to his knees.

“I know every fault lies with me. I nearly got Cordelia killed.”

“I’m here to make amends. I beg you, Cordelia, grant me just one last chance.” It had only taken two days for the formidable head of the Wren family to fall apart completely.

He looked haggard, stripped of all his arrogance.

“Chance? There is no chance, Phineas.”

“Our love died the instant you chose to betray me.”

“Tomorrow marks the final day before our divorce paperwork is finalised. We can go to sign the judgment papers first thing in the morning.”

Phineas remained kneeling, his bodyguards lingering silently outside the closed door.

“But…”

“No more excuses.” I drew in a shaky breath and fixed him with a sharp, unyielding stare.

“Haven’t you inflicted enough suffering on me?”

Loving you turned my entire world to ruin.

“I gave you chance after chance, and you threw every single one away. What reason do I have left to forgive you?”

A bitter, hollow laugh escaped my lips.

“Because you’re the Don of the Wren family?”

“If you intend to coerce me into changing my mind, you might as well put a bullet in me right now.”
