After the launch, I didn’t take any interviews.

Leo walked over and handed me a bottle of water.

“Boss, after today, we’re going to explode.”

I took the water. “Yeah.”

“The automakers are already sending over letters of intent. Way faster than we expected.”

“Yeah.”

“Boss, aren’t you happy?”

I looked down at the bottle in my hands.

Happy? I didn’t know. I just felt tired.

My phone rang. Unknown number.

I answered.

“Skylar? It’s me, Samuel. Good launch today.”

“Thanks.”

“Samuel, aren’t you still with Apex?”

“Skylar, business is business. Friendship is friendship.” His voice was even. “Skyline needs capital. Think about it.”

“I will.”

I hung up. Leo asked, “Samuel wants to invest? Boss, you’re not actually going to say yes, are you?”

I turned to him. “Why not?”

“He’s Ethan’s guy. He—”

“He’s an investor.” I cut him off. “Investors don’t pick sides. They pick winners. Today our product is good, so he comes to us. Tomorrow someone else’s is better, he’ll go to them.”

Leo asked, “So what’s our next move?”

“The launch was just the beginning. Next comes production. Then mass manufacturing. A million things after that.”

“That’s not what I meant.”

He smiled. “I meant, what are you going to do about Ethan? He lost a lot of face today. With his personality, he won’t let this go.”

I looked at the sunset.

“Leo, do you know why I started that company six years ago?”

“Why?”

“Because I believed technology could change the world.”

“And now?”

“I still believe it.” I turned to face him. “So no matter what Ethan does, he can’t stop me. He just can’t.”

In the distance, the white test vehicle sat quietly on the track.

The Skyline Intelligence logo still stuck to its side.

Then Leo’s phone rang.

He answered. His face went pale.

“Boss, Apex Dynamics just issued a statement. They’re suing us for trade secret theft. They’re asking the court to freeze all our patents and halt the product launch.”

His voice shook. “The summons has been issued.”
