“If You Can’t Bear My Mistress, We Can Swap Newtons”- So I Married His Worst Rival At the Wedding Chapter 08

After my mom died, the security cameras and the house staff were all replaced.

Every time I said I was going on a business trip, I was actually searching.

Finally found the old nanny in a remote rural town.

A little pressure, a little money, and she told me the truth.

Loretta said daughters were useless. Wanted my mom to give her shares to her son. Mom said no. So Loretta pushed her down the stairs.

My dad paid off the nanny. But she was scared he’d change his mind and kill her to tie up loose ends.

She hid a USB drive. It had footage of Loretta doing the pushing. And my dad covering it up.

It had been years. The town was damp.

I spent a fortune and waited a full year to get the data recovered.

And right now, that evidence was sitting at the police station.

“All right. Sorry to keep everyone waiting.”

“If you don’t mind, please stay for the wedding. The Drake and De Luca families will be sending out thank-you gifts.”

Then everyone watched as the black-clad men placed in front of every guest a gold brick.

The size and weight alone were obscene.

Talk about old money.

They all started showering us with blessings.

Nico tossed a card at Preston’s feet.

“Thanks for setting up the wedding for me and my wife, Hale. Don’t worry. We’re not cheap.”

“That’s what you spent. I would’ve given you more, but my wife said giving an extra dime to a snake like you is worse than feeding it to a dog.”

He put his arm around me and turned to leave.

“Sloane.”

Preston’s voice cracked.

“Sloane, are you really going to be this cold?”

“I messed up. I shouldn’t have put you through what your mother went through. I’m sorry.”

“Please. Give me one more chance. I’ll cut Tessa off completely. The marriage license with her is fake. I had someone make it just to keep her happy.”

“All I ever wanted was to marry you. I just—I just wanted you to bend a little.”

Tessa stared at him in disbelief.

“Preston. What do you mean the license is fake?”

“You told me if I helped you steal Sloane’s proposal, I could prove to your family that I actually matter. That you’d finally have the balls to get that license with me.”

“I gave up the guy I loved for your future. I stayed close to her for years—the woman you were supposed to marry—just so I could still see you. How could you do this to me?”

The crowd erupted.

Everyone looked at Preston with disgust.

But he didn’t care anymore. He slapped Tessa across the face.

“Shut up. You’re the reason this happened. You think I didn’t know you rigged that Truth or Dare card to make me kiss you?”

“The license was just to make you feel better. Even if you were a heiress tomorrow, I’d never marry you. Because I fell for Sloane a long time ago.”

“But I never thought you’d go after her like that. You used to be so quiet. So scared. My wedding. My family’s whole northern business. You wrecked everything. This is what I get for scraping the bottom of the barrel. You’re pathetic.”

“I never wanna see you again.”

Tessa stood there frozen. Didn’t even seem to notice when he ripped the ring off her finger.

In that moment, I saw something in her eyes break.

Then she ran off crying, her face in her hands.

Preston didn’t watch her go. He dropped to one knee in front of me, holding the ring.
