My Hockey Boyfriend Kept Me a Secret, So I Went Public with Someone Else Chapter 13

[Amelia’s POV]

After the bonfire, I went back to my tent alone. The bugs were bad, and they loved me. Logan went to the camp store to buy bug spray.

A tall shadow fell across my tent. I opened the zipper. Chase.

“Millie, let’s talk.”

“There’s nothing to talk about.” I ducked back inside and tried to zip it shut. Chase was faster. He yanked me out like I weighed nothing.

He started rambling about his reasons, his regret. When I didn’t react, he dropped to his knees.

My heart jolted — not from feeling touched. I looked up and saw Logan coming back with a plastic bag. I tried to pull away. Chase held on.

Logan reached us. He grabbed my other hand and told Chase to let go. They both pulled harder. I said “Ow.”

Logan let go immediately. Chase didn’t. I lost my balance and fell backward —

Instead of hitting the ground, I landed on Chase’s lap.

Then came a crack.

Loud. Sharp.

Chase screamed. “Ah! My leg!”

In the tent, I had some scrapes, nothing bad. Chase was a different

story. People scrambled, called an ambulance, drove him to the city hospital.

Under a lantern that swayed in the night wind, Logan cleaned my cuts. His face was serious. His lips pressed together.

I tried to make small talk.

He dropped the cotton ball and crushed me in a hug.

“What’s wrong?” I asked softly.

He just shook his head against my shoulder. “Nothing.”

He was clearly not fine. He stayed until I fell asleep.

The next morning, he was still there. He’d slept sitting up, his head on the edge of my bed. His eyes had dark circles. They were bloodshot. He looked like he’d been up all night.

I touched his tired face. “What happened? Can you tell me?”

A tear hit my hand.

Hot. Out of nowhere.

My heart clenched. I pulled him into my arms.

For the first time, Logan told me about his past.

His childhood shadow.

His mom worked far away. He hadn’t seen her in a long time. He called and asked her to come home. It was the holidays. Roads were packed. On the way back, there was a pileup on the highway. Multiple cars.

After that, Logan learned to hold back. To hide what he really wanted.

“Squeeze too hard, and it breaks… Want too much, and you lose it.”

That’s why he’d let go as soon as I said it hurt.

My heart ached and swelled at the same time. I laced my fingers with his. “You can hold on tight now. I won’t break.”

His hand cupped the back of my neck.

He kissed me.

I felt wetness on my face, on my lips — his tears or mine, I didn’t know.
