[Amelia’s POV]

Then I heard a story I didn’t know, but somehow felt familiar.

It started freshman year. Logan saw me at a cross-conference hockey game. I was holding a bottle of ice water at the edge of the rink. Because of the rules, I couldn’t go any closer.

I was Chase’s girlfriend, but all I could do was watch him take water from other girls.

Logan saw how lonely I looked.

He walked up and asked if he could buy my water. I handed it over and even cheered for him. I only had eyes for Chase back then. I didn’t even notice there was another team visiting. After that, every time he had a chance to come to our school, he looked for me.

“You’re smart, Millie. You’re honest. You have a good heart. You weren’t just nice to me. You help strangers. Sometimes they take advantage of you, but you just laugh it off and keep helping. Liking you — that’s the easiest thing in the world.”

I felt shy. “You’re exaggerating.” I looked down.

He picked up a french fry and bit one end, holding the other end toward my mouth.

“So, Millie. Would you want to like someone else instead? I’ll go public with you. I don’t care about the guy in the background.”

I stared. What was this? How could anyone share the person they loved? Unless… unless they didn’t think they deserved any better.

Unless they believed whatever they could hold onto was already the best they’d ever get.

I took the other end of the fry. Then I kept going, all the way to his hand.

“But I care.”

He flinched. His eyes got wet.

“Wait here.”

I pulled out my phone, opened Chase’s iMessage, and transferred the rest of what I owed him. One payment. One line: “Debt cleared. We’re done.”

Then I texted Nina: “Sorry, Nina.”

When I looked up, Logan was gone. A minute later, he came back with his head down.

“I already paid the bill. I won’t bother you —”

I grabbed his hand. “I care, so…” I held up my phone. “I broke up with him.”

The next second, everything went dark.
