The Don’s Secret Wife Chapter 07

Joseph snapped. He crossed the room in two strides and clamped his hand around Ruby’s throat. “You touched her. You pulled that tube. You lied to my face. All of it was you!”

Ruby’s face went scarlet, her breath rattling, but she was still smiling. “And what difference does it make? You followed me around like a fucking lapdog the whole time.”

“What did I lose? A driver? I can buy ten more. But you? You threw away a woman who stood by you for seven years, who lost her leg saving your life.”

“She was with you when you had nothing, and you’re the one who destroyed her. I’m terrible. Bu you? You’re worse than I could ever be.”

Every word landed exactly where it was meant to.

He shoved her off the bed.

She hit the floor hard, curling into herself from the pain of her torn stitches, and still laughing. “There he is. There’s the Joseph I know.”

“You think I didn’t know about you and Ina? I knew from day one. I wanted to see what you’d do, and you were even more pathetic than I expected.”

“She was the only person who ever believed in you, and you killed her yourself.”

“Shut up!”

Joseph backhanded her. Twice. His face had moved past fury into something hollow and dark.

“You’re right. What I did is unforgivable. But I’m going to make sure you burn for your part.”

He turned to his capo. “Spread the word. The Maranzano family is done with Mantle Shipping, effective immediately. I want their ports seized and their businesses bankrupt within a week.”

“No! You can’t do that, Joseph! We’ve been married for years, our families are tied together. You’ll ruin yourself doing this!”

Joseph looked down at her. “You think I need the Mantles? You lost, Ruby. The second you decided to play this game, you lost.”

He walked out. Ruby’s screaming followed him down the hallway, and he didn’t look back.

joseph drove to the morgue.

They pulled back the sheet, and there I was.

I hadn’t died on impact. A tree broke my fall partway down. My body hit the branches first, then the

ground.

But it wasn’t enough to save me.

The baby had taken what little strength I had remaining. I left before the ambulance arrived.

Joseph reached for my face, his hand shaking, barely there, then pulled back, like he was afraid he’d

hurt me even now.

He sank to his knees in front of me. The tears fell heavy and loud against the tile.

“Ina… I’m sorry…”
