He Broke Me Quietly, So I Left Quietly Chapter 10

Three days later, Liam’s body was flown back to his home country.

A large memorial service was held in the city center. Business leaders and reporters gathered in large numbers to honor the young entrepreneur who had died saving lives in a war zone.

Liam’s assistant, Noah, stood in a corner of the hall. He was the only one who knew the whole truth.

Liam had written his will before he ever came to Veria. Every penny of his estate was left to Elara Carter.

After the service ended, Noah called me.

“Ms. Carter, Mr. Bennett left all his assets to you. Would you be able to return home to handle the legal paperwork?”

I was quiet for a moment.

“I don’t want the inheritance. Donate it all to his medical aid foundation.”

I paused.

“And… pay respects to him for me.”

The call ended.

Back at the psychiatric facility, Mia learned about Liam’s death from the news on the TV in her room. She began slamming herself against the walls and screaming.

“No! Liam can’t be dead! He promised he would take care of me forever!”

No one paid attention to her. The facility reinforced the lock on her door and increased her dose of sedatives.

His darkest words had come back to haunt him. She would never leave that place for the rest of her life.

The bitter irony was that this was supposed to be my fate.

If I hadn’t received that call five years ago, I would be the one locked inside. And Mia would be standing outside, arm in arm with Liam, stopping by now and then to look at me with pity.

At that moment, I stood on the highest mountain in Veria.

The rising sun broke through the war zone’s haze, bathing me in warm golden light. I took a deep breath of the cold morning air.

Behind me was the path I had traveled.

Smoke rose from the medical camp at the foot of the mountain. A new group of wounded had arrived overnight. It would be another full-capacity day for the medical camp.

I thought about Liam.

Our relationship was tangled and impossible to put into words.

Did he love me? Yes, he did. The kindness he showed me when we were young wasn’t all fake.

But even the warmest love can fade with time.

I let out a quiet sigh.

“It’s all in the past.”

I said those words to the wind, to the distance, and to the version of myself from five years ago who had cried in that hospital room and decided to leave.

I made the right choice.

A helicopter at the medical camp roared to life in the distance. A new rescue mission was about to begin.

I put on my sunglasses, masking the fleeting, tangled emotion in my gaze.

Then I walked down the hillside in long strides, toward the helicopter.

The wind blew through my short hair.

I didn’t look back.

Those who live must always keep moving forward.
