His Final Betrayal Was My First Move Chapter 37

Several months later, the first annual fundraising dinner for the Maine Coast Art Education Foundation was held in a modern art space in Portland, converted from an old warehouse.

There was none of the suffocating luxury of a Boston ballroom. Instead, there were exposed red-brick walls, high industrial ceilings, and paintings by young artists funded by the foundation hanging throughout the space. Outside the huge floor-to-ceiling windows lay the deep blue of Casco Bay and the glittering night sky. The air held no clash of expensive perfumes, only the sweetness of champagne, the aroma of food, and the sound of sincere laughter.

As the founder, Amelia stood at the podium in a simple, elegant navy gown. She looked out at the room and saw young students who were now able to attend art school because of the foundation’s support, local artists who had picked up their brushes again, and all the donors who believed in her dream.

Her gaze finally landed on Julian in the front row. He wasn’t wearing his usual cashmere sweater, but a well-tailored dark suit. He was looking at her intently, his eyes filled with undisguised tenderness and pride.

“…Art shouldn’t exist only in closed galleries or at expensive auctions,” Amelia’s voice was clear and strong, echoing through the space. “It should belong to everyone, just like the Maine coastline. It is the power that reminds us, in our most difficult moments, that there is still light within us. Thank you to everyone here tonight. You have allowed that light to illuminate more corners.”

Applause rose like a tide, sincere and warm.

Amelia smiled and stepped down from the stage. The dinner music began again. But just as she was about to return to her seat, the band suddenly shifted to one of her favorite folk songs, melancholy yet infinitely gentle.

She froze. Then the lights in the hall gradually dimmed, leaving only a soft spotlight that landed perfectly on Julian, who had just walked onto the stage.

The guests’ conversations stopped. Every eye focused on him.

“Sorry to take a moment of your time.” Julian’s voice came through the microphone, carrying a smile. “First, as the largest donor to the Maine Coast Art Education Foundation and, of course, as Amelia’s most loyal supporter, I am immeasurably proud of everything she has accomplished tonight.”

Warm laughter and applause sounded from below the stage.

Julian’s gaze crossed the crowd and locked onto Amelia.

“Many people know we met at Harvard, but very few know that back then, I only dared to watch from a corner of the library, from far away, this girl who shone like the sun. I thought our lives would never intersect.”

His voice grew low and full of feeling.

“But fate allowed us to meet again on the coast of Maine. I watched her build her own kingdom from the ruins, calmly and resiliently, brick by brick. She doesn’t need a prince to save her, because she is her own queen.”

Amelia’s heart began to race. She felt a warmth fill her eyes.

“So I stand here today not because I want to be her rescuer, but because I want to apply to become the most honored partner in her kingdom.”

Before the words had fully settled, Julian slowly went down on one knee.

He took a velvet box from his suit pocket and opened it. Beneath the spotlight, the ring had no enormous central diamond. Instead, two strands of pavé diamonds intertwined, like two shining galaxies leaning into each other, merging into one.

“Amelia Reed.” Julian lifted his head, his eyes brighter than all the stars in the sky. “This ring symbolizes partnership, not ownership. It represents two independent souls choosing to walk side by side. My family loves you. They are proud of you, just as I am.”

“I don’t want to be the end of your journey. I only want to be the person who keeps a light on for you and shares every view with you on all your future travels. Will you… marry me?”

The hall was silent for a beat, then erupted into cheers and applause. The students Amelia had helped stood up, whistling and blessing her.

Amelia was already in tears. She covered her mouth with a trembling hand, unable to restrain the smile on her lips. She couldn’t speak at first, only nodding hard, again and again.

“Yes! Yes!”

The smile in Julian’s eyes overflowed. He stood, walked quickly to her, and gently slid the ring symbolizing equality and companionship onto her finger. It fit perfectly, as if it had been made for her.

He pulled her tightly into his arms and whispered in her ear, in a voice only the two of them could hear, “I love you.”

Outside the window, the Maine night sky was full of stars, pure and vast. Amid all the sincere blessings, on the stage of hope and rebirth they had created together, they held each other and kissed.

The new chapter of Amelia Reed’s life was, in that moment, crowned by the light of love and respect.
