His Final Betrayal Was My First Move Chapter 19

The next day, Daphne happily waved a pair of ferry tickets in front of Griffin’s face.

“Nantucket! Griffin, how did you know I wanted to go there?” She gave him a loud kiss, her voice full of excitement. “The perfect prelude to our European trip!”

Griffin looked at the ticket printed with “Hy-Line Cruises,” and his mind went blank.

Nantucket.

The name was like a rusty nail driven into his memory. He remembered Amelia, more than once, spreading a travel magazine open before him, pointing at the gray-shingled cottages surrounded by hydrangeas, her eyes bright as she said, “Can we go here for our anniversary? Just the two of us.”

And every time, he had brushed her off with work as an excuse. They had been married for years, yet they had never had a proper trip, just the two of them.

But when he decided to take Daphne away to relax, the first destination that had inexplicably come to mind was this one.

“What’s wrong?” Daphne nudged him with her elbow, pulling him from his thoughts. “You’ve been distracted since last night. Thinking about some annoying foundation business again?”

“Nothing.” Griffin forced a smile, his gaze falling on Daphne’s perfectly made-up face. “Just wondering if I left anyone off the dinner guest list.”

He lied.

He couldn’t stop comparing her to Amelia. Daphne was a carefully carved work of art, every angle designed for social media. She cheered over a perfect sunset selfie and grew irritated when the sea wind messed up her hair.

Amelia… Amelia would probably find a quiet corner and read a book, letting the sea wind blow over her. Her happiness was internal, not a performance.

With these complicated feelings churning inside him, they boarded the ferry to Nantucket.

Daphne was like a canary released from its cage, excitedly flitting around the deck, her phone camera almost never stopping. She dragged Griffin to the bow and took countless photos in a *Titanic*-style pose, then immediately posted them to Instagram with the caption: “Sailing toward our new chapter.”

Griffin dutifully played the part of the perfect boyfriend, cooperating with her, hugging her, kissing her.

But his gaze kept drifting past her shoulder to the open blue sea.

His heart was like that ocean.

Calm on the surface, but with undercurrents surging below, repeatedly washing over one name.

Amelia.
