Ethan’s face hardened, and he took a step forward.

“What the hell are you talking about? Don’t assume everyone is like you.”

I stopped Ethan and looked at Lowell, my voice calm.

“Lowell, this is the end for us.”

“In seven years, I never did anything to wrong you.”

“But with you, I was never the priority.”

Lowell’s lips trembled, as if he wanted to say something.

But I didn’t want to hear it anymore.

I turned around, took Ethan by the wrist, and walked out of the café.

Only after we had walked a long way did I realize I had been trembling the entire time.

Ethan stood beside me and asked softly, “Are you okay?”

Suddenly, I wanted to cry, but I also felt a little like laughing.

“How did you happen to be here?”

He froze for a second, his ears turning a little red.

“I… I followed you. I was afraid you wouldn’t be able to handle him alone.”

“When I saw him grab you, I just couldn’t hold back. I’m sorry, Indigo. I shouldn’t have hit him.”

His voice grew quieter, and he kept sneaking glances at my face.

My nose stung, and tears began to fall.

The moment I cried, Ethan panicked even more.

He hurriedly dug a crumpled pack of tissues from his pocket and handed it to me.

“Thank you, Ethan.”

We slowly walked back together.

After that day, Lowell didn’t send me any more messages, nor did he come looking for me again.

Later, I heard he had applied for a transfer to an office in a city far up north.

My friend sounded surprised over the phone.

“I heard he requested it himself. No one could talk him out of it. He just dropped all his projects. Indy, did this have something to do with you?”
